Pressure made on a lower back in infancy by forced sitting.

Hi everyone, I have a question, which is bothering me, maybe you can help.
In my home country of Ukraine babies under the age of around 6 month are never taught to sit or made to sit by their moms or others, but they wait for the child to learn to sit on his own. If infants are carried in vertical position they should be very well attached to a parent (like in a sling wrap) without any pressure made on a lower back. It is recomended by doctors and every one knows it, otherwise it can cause problems with back and back pain in future (there has been lots of research about it).
But I found that in Canada people have a very different practice, they make their babies sit on sofas, laps, etc, even if babies who are a few months old.
My question is: what do you think about this difference? Does it really cause problems in the future? Just curious  about your own experience or someone in your family.

I think forcing a body into a position where the body's musculature and skeletal system can't support them could cause issues. There is a sequence that babies follow from birth to walking and their bodies develop the appropriate muscle groups to support the new positions/gross motor functions. By propping a baby into a sitting position, they must compensate with muscles that are not meant to be used in that way and/or adjust their bony structures (like sitting on the sacrum rather than on the ischial tuberosities) because the muscles just are not there yet to keep the pelvis in the neutral position. Most babies probably would not have long-term problems with occasionally being propped up to sit, though.

I agree totally with #2.

 

My midwife also stated that what the baby is not able to do by itself - sit, stand, etc. - should not be forced on it. My doc told me that when the baby is forced to stand before it has learned to do so than the achilles tendon is shortened permanantly. I would consider that something similar for other muscle groups, sinews or tendons would be true for the sitting position.
