Need a girl's name that means "to have"

I am due in December and don't know if we are having a boy or girl. We have a boys name picked out (for the most part). And, we had a girls name, but need to change it. The girl's name was Alini.

We found a new name that means "hope". Asha. And we would like to find a name that would have a meaning to go with it... like, what name means "we have this"... or "to have"....? We are big into meanings... or at least the first name meaning should go along with the middle name meaning.

Googling for the meaning "to have" is very difficult... every web page has "to have". :D

I wonder if you might have more luck trying an on-line translator and finding a word or phrase you could turn into a word from another language that means "to have" or "we have"?  I wouldn't think that would be a very common name meaning.

Yes, this is getting quite difficult the more I look into it.

I think plan be will be something along the lines of ___________ hope. So, now I need more ideas of what could go in the _______. We like Christian... biblical meanings... but not so much sticking to biblical names.

This is a hard one! I have a few things that *might* work:

Avere or Avoir are words meaning literally to have. Avere is Italian, I believe, where Avoir is French.

The meaning of the name Tarisai is Look, Behold
The origin of the name Tarisai is African Notes: Zimbabwe.

The meaning of the name Abeje is We Asked To Have This One
The origin of the name Abeje is African Notes: Yoruba, Nigeria

The meaning of the name Jessica is God Beholds
The origin of the name Jessica is Hebrew Notes: Name invented by Shakespeare for the daughter of a Jewish merchant in 'The Merchant of Venice'. He probably derived it from Jesca (Yiska), the name of a minor Biblical character. Jessica Biel, actress. Jessica Simpson, singer. Jessica Tandy, actress.

The meaning of the name Mya is Mine
The origin of the name Mya is American Notes: Pronounced "MY-ah" or "MEE-yah"
Even though Mia isn't traditionally of this meaning, I'm sure you could use that spelling as well for the Italian word.

Good luck with your search! How fun to have the first and middle names tie together! :)

Interesting names.  That's definitely the idea. I am definitely going to look into other languages that could mean "to have". This was getting so difficult for me, that now I am looking into names that mean "law" to go with another suggested name. But, I'm going to look into your suggestions. Jessica and Mia are good ones... more traditional to go with Asha which is not so common... but, then we have the problem with first name ending in "a" and middle name beginning with "a"... then it sounds like one long name. But, I could probably live with that. :)

I hope you find a variant you like! It's so important that a name "sound right" to both of you - you'll be using it a lot! :)

One of the names on our list, Talia, means "blooming" in Hebrew. We plan to use Hope as a middle. Not the same as "to have" but I like the idea that Hope grows, KWIM?

eta: Daria means "possess." What about searching other words that mean "have?"

Yes, I've been wondering about other words that mean "hope". Possess is a good one.  BTW, I love the "blooming hope". :) My DDs first & middle name mean Holy Pause.

I love this, too - my DS3 is Athan Leor - Athan meaning immortal, Leor meaning my light - together, My Immortal Light.

I did a search on my baby name thingie on my phone but didn;t have much luck with 'to have.' Good luck!

I saw your post earlier and it's been on my mind all week. What about taking a step back from "having" and thinking about HOPE as a gift or blessing that comes from God; the giving coming before the having. I found a few names along those lines on thinkbabynames.com...

  • Dorothy Asha - God's gift of hope
  • Elizabeth Asha - God's promise of hope (there are many, many variations of Elizabeth all meaning "God's promise", from Betty to Liza and a million others)
  • Rainbow Asha - Covenent of hope
  • Shiloh Asha - His gift of Hope

Or playing around with Asha as a first name, as in "Hope ___"...

  • Asha Amaris - Hope promised by God (that one's got the double "A" thing going on)
  • Asha Lael - Hope belonging to God

And some other namess meaning "gift/given" but that end with "A"...

  • Doretta - Gift of God
  • Liora - God's gift of light to me (I love the meaning of this one!)
  • Mattea - Gift of God
  • Natana - God has given
  • Nathania - God has given
  • Pheodora - Gift of God
  • Tea - Gift of God
  • Thea - Gift of God
  • Theodora - God's gift

Just had another thought.

"Lani" in Hawaiian is "gift." Lani Asha would be "gift of hope."

I'm a woman on a mission lol. I'm a little obsessed with name meanings also, so I understand completely how you feel.

Good luck mama!

Adia means "gift" or "being a gift", which is what we named my daughter.

And it has a song with it by Sarah McLahclan, which is always great to hear on the radio.
