Hope you've gotten some help for your painful tooth by now!  Dental xrays (ANY xrays, unless radioiodine is used for contrast) are safe while breastfeeding.  There's nothing that can be passed through your milk.  The medications that would commonly be used (novacaine, nitrous oxide) are considered compatable with breastfeeding.  Kellymom lists more details, as would Hale's Medications & Mother's Milk.  http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/illness-surgery/dentalwork/

If you are having an older dental work that contains mercury (amalgam fillings) removed you might want to research a bit more about chelation to avoid heavy metal exposure to you  & your nursling, and look for a dentist who makes every effort to safely remove the filling.  If your dentist recommends an amalgam filling, you might also want to look into other options.
