DIY modifications to the babyhawk oh snap?

The little clip things that slide up and down on the piping drive me INSANE! They don't stay up at the height I want them, and they constantly just pop right off (yes, they are CLOSED) and are extremely difficult to put back on. They do the worst popping off when he's on my front, which is when the chest clip is the most important! I also really wish I could tighten it a bit more. I like a nice snug fit around the chest. I'm handy on a sewing machine and have snap pliers and a nice collection of kamsnaps. I'd love to modify the way the chest buckle attaches/moves on the straps. I could probably figure out some makeshift way of doing it, but before I do that, I'm wondering if maybe someone has done this before and has a good, efficient method I could copy?
