Samsoleil go easy on yourself. It takes longer than a week to lose your gains and you've also done a lot of other physical activity that will help. Sometimes life just gets in the way. I don't think you've messed up and when you get a chance to run it will just feel that much better!!

SamSoleil -- taking care of yourself and your family should be first priority. Once everyone's feeling better, dive back in. In the mean time, take it easy.

Hey Ladies!

Thanks for the words of encouragement! The race went quite well. My time was 55:18 which is just about 11 min/mile. I have been running just under a 10 min/mile at my best this spring and that's without the jogger so my time for the race was good in my mind. The weather was pretty good - cool, a bit of wind but at our backs most of the time. The race started out crappy because a bunch of people doing the walk started to close to the tail end of the runners so I had to weave in and out of these people for about 3 blocks before we could actually run. I ended up starting out at a really fast pace once I got past the walkers (my adrenalin was raging and it was slightly downhill) which then made the big hill just after the first mile mark a real b&*%^#. So I walked a little bit about half way up the hill but then ran the entire rest of the race. I figure I was pushing at least 40 pounds of stroller, kid, and water/clothes but I managed to pass people the entire race. All in all it was good. I don't know if I would run it again with the jogger. It's just not organized enough although this year had a record turn out (over 12,000).

But I'm feeling good. I'll get back into training mode tomorrow -- if I don't get pregnant by July, I want to run the 10 mile race in my town so I can't rest on my laurels now.

See you in the new thread for this week! (OT - I must say, the new look of the boards has me freaked out a bit)

Oh, Samsoleil -- don't worry about this week - I missed a week when I had a cold and four days when dd and dh were sick -- you'll get right back in there when you feel better!

Editing to update my totals from the week:

ran 15 miles total (3.5 mi, 4 mi, 2.5 mi, 5 mi)

EXCELLENT JOB SCHATZ!!!

yeah, congratulations, that is an excellent time and with a jogger to boot! Woo Hoo.

So last week I ran five times...41, 25, 45, 35, 40...all non-stop. I think this week I will try doing some speed training within one of my runs. Just 5 1 minute lengths of a little bit faster. Not a sprint, or even a stride, just a little faster.

Woohoo Schatz!! Did I read you right when you said that you were pushing your kid in a stroller??!!!!!! Or am I getting that wrong?

I have a huge question. I've been running 20 min. everyday for the last 4 days. Today after about a mile my knees started aching terribly. I do have weak knees, but, I used to be in track in high school and they never bothered me much then. Do I just need to build up strength again? I do not want to give up running, I'm enjoying it too much. If anybody has any suggestions or advice I'd really appreciate it.

Thanx,
Megan

Schatz,

Awesome on your race!!! way to go sistah!!!!

Megan,

My knees bother me once in a while too, though not so much now that I have proper running shoes. I ice my knee and keep it raised, on the days it hurts. I also take some ibuprofen....but if they hurt everyday, you may want to look into that!!!

You are correct - I figure I was pushing about 40 pounds between the stroller, dd (who weighs about 23 lbs), water and other gear. The only hard part about having the stroller was the big hill and trying to get around the walkers in the beginning.

I've run the race 4 other times and each time I was impressed by people who ran with joggers. So, I just had to prove to myself that I could do it. There many people running with joggers but the one who really made me was the women pushing a triple jogging stroller (three seats across with three kids in it) - that was one tough mama!

Megan - I have no advice about your knees - maybe someone else will have ideas.

New Shoes. New Shoes. New Shoes.

If you have new shoes, work to keep your hamstrings strong. To do this you could put light weights around your ankles, lie on your tummy and lift your feet from your knees. Alternatively, spend some time on a bike in a lower gear than you would otherwise choose.

Finally, if you are significantly over your usual weight, you may need to loose a little bit to reduce the pounding.

I bet new shoes will do it, though.
