Names, anyone? - Page 10

I think I've decided on Nora. We have a Natalie, so having two N names would be nice, and I've always loved "Nora". It's simple, sweet, classy, a bit artistic, musical almost ... means "light" in French.

Who knows if I'll change my mind. But it's kind of been there all along ...

Now I have to think of a middle name  :)

Oh, Nora is very nice smile.gif

No advice on nicknames, they tend to take on a life of their own. My parents had no intention of me having a nickname, but it is what I go by and prefer now, my full name is Kathryn but I got the nickname Katie as soon as I started school and it stuck. However, I only accept Katie and the occasional Kate, no Kathy, so it is pretty easy to enforce your preferences IME. My DD Sydney gets called Syd on occasional, but she knows her full name. I like nicknames though, so I don't worry about it too much. With Oliver, we will definitely use Ollie, for Alice it doesn't really have a nickname, maybe Ali, but what's the point when it doesn't shorten it smile.gif

No crazy phonetics...just like "Field" plus "en or un." We know of a guy named Fielding, but changed it up a bit! :)

I love Nora, so cute!  I also love Ollie - Oliver was in my top 3, but DP vetoed it.  For us, Mario has been a front-runner and has kinda stuck for the last month or so.  I am more keen on Rio, but DP wanted his name to be longer and he got really excited when we came across Mario.  I like it too and I can still call him Rio for short smile.gif  Luckily we don't live in a country that has a 'nintendo culture', otherwise I'd think more carefully about this name...  I hear people called Mario are constantly being asked 'Where's Luigi?'  Can't really see that going on here.

The middle name will be Felix, after DP's late father, so it looks like we'll have a Mario Felix in our laps come May love.gif

Mario Felix is great and Rio is a fun nickname smile.gif

When we went on our honeymoon a few years ago to Costa Rica I noticed Rio could be a cool baby name. On our long drive around the country we'd drive over so many little rios! We're not considering the name at this point but I still think it's cool!

Thanks ladies!  Loogiejane - I love that you were noticing baby names on your honeymoon!!  winky.gif  I also love the river connection - we live on a beautiful river and it's a big part of our lives, so Rio is very fitting for our baby!

I am still clueless. I loved Nora but DD didn't. Thought I'd decided on Willa for a while, but I'm not sure anymore.

I think DD2's name is going to be very last minute  :)

We have had a boy and a girl name picked since before I got pregnant and I am kind of feeling a little sad that I am not having go through the whole baby name debate now:) What can I say? I love looking up and picking names! On the other hand, my cousin had her third boy almost a month ago and they've still not decided on a name for the little one. Everyone is teasing them about it at this point:)

So, DH suggested Oliver Thomas and I'm sold. We bantered back and forth with a bunch of middle names for Alice, but I dunno, I wasn't super sold on any. His favorites were:
Alice Sybil
Alice Simone

Some I am batting around this morning:
Alice Hannah
Alice Clara
Alice Sophie *
Alice Kira
Alice Zoey
Alice Marion
Alice Marie
Alice Sylvia *
Alice Cora *
Alice Daphne
Alice Heidi

*These sound best to me right now, I'm mostly liking two or three syllable names right now, especially ending with "ee" or "a" sounds and avoiding vowel L start or end names as they don't sound right with our last name. Avoiding vowel start names too as they don't sound right with Alice. Hmm, I may think about it some more and send some ideas to DH.

That's kind of how I feel.  A couple of months ago, DH was perusing a baby names book and threw out a girl's name.  We both liked it.  Then a few days later, I suggested a middle name to go with it and DH liked that.  We haven't really discussed it since!  I wrote the full name down on a post-it note last week to see if we liked the way it was spelled out.  Still like it.  The excitement is kind of gone, but we aren't telling anyone so that helps.

Does it drive anyone else crazy that *everyone* seems to be nosy about baby names?  MIL asks every time she talks to us.  And DSD is dying to know, but we are pretty evasive every time she asks.

I think it would bug me less with DSD, but my MIL drives me batty, so if I told her we didn't have one, weren't sharing it, whatever and she kept still bugging me, I'd just be highly irritated. I might just give out a fake name :P!

I just think it's hard with kids because they don't understand the "we're not telling anyone until the baby is here" concept.  smile.gif  And I know this sounds terrible, but I'm fairly certain she will tell her mother.  She's the last person I want to know our baby's name before she's even born!

Maybe a fake name is the way to go....

Yeah, if someone was bugging me about it constantly I would be annoyed. I've only gotten occasional questions about names and if I say we don't know then people stop bugging me. I usually don't like discussing names (except here) until we are pretty sure on them as I don't want people's opinions on them usually smile.gif

We're discussing a few middle names right now for Alice again:

Alice Maerin/Maeryn (I need DH to pronounce this for me as this is his suggestion and I am not sure about it)
Alice Sophia
Alice Cora

I dunno, we'll see, he's stuck on the first one right now but liked the other two pretty well too.

Ah, gotta love the people who feel the need to give their opinions, especially when the name is set in stone. Sylas' name was 100% and my FIL made all sorts of comments on them, same after he found out we were naming this baby Calliope. In my pregnancy hormone induced madness I told him if he had nothing nice to say, to shut the hell up.. hahah.

What do you all think of Lorrin (for a boy) it's a family name...nickname would be Ori (light in Hebrew)?  Our list of possibilities keeps morphing and we are "meh" about all of them at this point.

Okay guys. Here's my weird-name confession.

I have loved the name Story since DD was a tadpole and I didn't think we'd ever have more.

Now, it seems pretty wacky, though still lovely.

Confirm that if you were an adult, you'd wish your parents hadn't picked the name Story?

There are so many possible issues ...  storytime ... storybook ... bedtime story ... what's the story .........

AmIright?

OtherMother, Story was seriously in the running for us for a while until the hubby got sick of it!  Truth be told, I'd still consider it.  Other names we've considered were Bowie and Nova, so I guess we like the uncommon ones...

I do agree that the kid might be given a hard time throughout life but I *will* say two of my favorite girls names (that I could never use because DH would NEVER go for it) were "weird" names. My guy friend became friends with a girl in college named Bright. Ugh, as soon as I heard that I thought HOW awesome...so positive sounding. The other, a camp counselor I had way back when, her name was Happy. I kid you not. SO cool in my opinion. I just feel like, why NOT have a name like that?

I also love the middle name Sunshine but yea DH vetoed it before it could barely leave my lips.

Or means light. Ori means "my light" as does Orli.
