Ok so here's my name dilemma... My son has my last name and I really want this one to have my name , and brothers last name too. Haven't told the boyfriend this yet, but at least they both start with "w". At least we're on the same page in what we want in a name something recognizable, spellable, unique, and probably something earthy / natural / ethereal maybe. Considering initials spelling a word for a possible nick name. Was seriously considering DEW for son, which is kind of redundant since last name contains water anyway. Went with ZAW anyway which has some pizzaz. So I keep thinking big brother Zeus and little ...? Better to think sibling...? I guess. Certainly one god name is enough and i think he needed this mame as a sick baby. Everest would be cool. Sounds like could hold one's own. Maybe a forest name would be better, considering our first date and what helps hold this fledgling family together.

I'm tempted to use Nadette which is a French nickname for Bernadette.  My mother's name is Bernadette with that nickname so that might be just a little weird but it's another 'ette name for you to consider.  I kinda like Manon but it'd probably be annoying to have to correct pronunciation all the time!

We named our first daughter a francophone name after my great-grandmother.  We hadn't actually managed to pick out a girls name before she was born!  I actually have 2 second cousins in Europe with the same name but since we're in the States and it's a new generation I figure it's okay!  The biggest problem is actually the reaction of the Quebecois when they hear her name since there's a certain music artist from there that's made it big!  LOL

I'm strongly considering a more gender neutral name if we have another girl.  That article that came out about resumes in the sciences being identical except for male vs. female names made a big impression on me.  Who knows what we'll end up with in the end!

Awesome names in here!

It's been bugging me about the name Isla...I came across it when I was pregnant with DS, and loved it.  I sort of knew it was a name that was going to grow in popularity though.  I don't really want something that is going to be uber common, but at the same time, it's similar enough to my grandmother's name that she would consider us naming the baby after her....I may use it anyway. 

I usually come up with a ton of names, and only loosely throw them around with DH.  If I try to convince DH of anything, he will refuse whatever I'm selling, but if I get HIM to come up with it, or at the very least I'm not pushy about it, he will usually come around.  He likes to wait until baby is born to decide anything, and I agree.  I came up with my son's name actually pretty early on, and I "knew" that it would be right for him, but really didn't want to commit to anything until I saw him.  His name is Nickolas Brian (Brian is my DH's middle name).  It's not particularly unique, but it's not hugely common either....I have a much harder time with boys names than with girls.

For middle names I am leaning toward Ryan (boy or girl) as that's a family name.  Although if it doesn't mesh well with the first name, we will think of something else...I am partial to "R" names though.

I really like Oliver but a friend of ours is just in love with the name so I don't think we'll use it. I also really like Sterling.

Does anyone have a different last name than their spouse? I think we'll put my last name as our kids' 2nd middle name so there's no confusion they're mine when they're growing up. Thoughts?

Also complicating things is my husband's last name is also a first name!

I like all of those names - I think any of them would work.  My DH also has a fist name as his last name, so I know the difficulties that can bring out :)

I don't, but I think that's a great idea!

I really like Owen Edward, I think Edward is a good choice for a middle name as it has got to be pretty popular because of Twilight, right?
I love Oliver, I might steal that as an idea for me if we end up with a boy!

Ugh, Twilight. Everyone I know is telling me, "You can't do Edward!" because we were originally thinking of it as a first name, but I think moving it to a middle name will be a good compromise. I don't want to choose a name that's super popular :/ My brothers and I all have the most popular names for our birth years!

I wouldn't refrain from choosing it because of an association like that since it will fade over time.  I get not wanting to choose something TOO popular though.  I didn't realize Edward was popular right now.

I was just cleaning things out and came across a RANDOM little box of things (strawberry shortcake figure, a starfish, disney coin, etc.) I'd save since I was a kid.  I found a folded up post-it note with the names I liked in high school and thought I'd share it just for kicks.  None of them are on our radar right now though I do still love Molly and Forrest.

I can't remember any names I liked in the long ago time, but DH has always loved Kayla (or Kala is the spelling he likes). I vetoed it, too popular imo.

I didn't know about Edward being popular either, but that is an ageless name. And the pop culture reference will fade for sure. My aunt and uncle loved the name Bailey for a boy with their first (14 years ago) but refused to use it because it was the name of a character on some TV show (Party of 5, I think?), they had a girl so it didn't matter. But 5 years later, on their 3rd kid, nobody even knew the show anymore, so their son's name is Bailey.

I am seriously struggling with names, I can't find any I like enough, especially that aren't popular, I have a thing about too popular names. But I also don't like anything too unusual. A tall order I know. I did it once, so dammit, I can do it again!

I have a different last name than my husband. He has a great last name, if I was ever to change mine, but I identify with my name too much and couldn't part with it.

I'd like to have my last name in there as a middle name. But then I also want to choose a namey middle name so I guess it's gonna leave the kid with 4 names. First Middle Middle Last. It also gives us more space for naming Kid after deceased family/friends which is a custom for us. Moreso family actually but DH's best friend tragically died in March so we've been chatting about naming after him. 

I'm not really into the 4 names thing but I think that's just gonna have to be how it plays out if I want my last name in there. DH has made his voice loud and clear how anti hyphen he is. And I don't really care about it so I didn't put up a fight.

I actually have names picked out that are at the top of the list but due to my not-finding-out-the-sex-or-buying-anything-for-babe-or-really-doing-anything-in-preparation-other-than-planning-the-birth part of me I can't share them. If we have a boy we prob won't tell anyone the name until 8 days after the birth when we he's named at his bris (raising my hand, Jewess here) and if it's a girl we might also wait 8 days just for the hell of it, we'll see. Maybe we'll just wait until the first day the torah is taken out of the ark after the baby is born to name him/her at the synagaogue. I think the torah comes out three times a week. You guys still with me? Ha. P.s I'm not even religious- I ate bacon this week!

I'd LIKE to share the names, because I like them. And no one here has listed my named but I guess it'll just have to wait, god willing, til May. But then it won't be a list, it'll just be "here's my kid's name" ha.

But I've enjoyed lurkin' here! Keep the names a comin!

We find out January 9th! Who knows if DH will like Oliver, but I'll suggest it if we have a boy or two!

I remember DH vetoed Julia last time, it is my late Aunt's name, but he thought it was creepy to name a baby after someone so recently deceased. He is really picky too, vetoed all my ideas last time!

Yeah, I struggle with that too. I want the name to be recognizable, but not too popular. I think DD's name Sydney worked well for that last time, but who knows. We did have Gabriel as our boy's name last time, but I think that is getting more popular!

Katie, I like Oliver!  I think that's a great name!

Sheryl, I agree about trying to find a name that is unique but easy and not too popular.   I think we did well with Nadia and Cora but if this one is a girl I'm not sure we'll ever agree on another name.

My spouse is DEAD set on naming our baby Zoe.

We are currently having discussions about the middle name. He insists that it be Olivia so that her initials will spell out her name. Z.O.E. (our last name starts with E)

I think this is totally corny and that no one even uses their initials much anymore so its a mute point. I am trying to put in my sister and aunt's middle name for her which is Patrice.

I had a patient today that named her son Grayson (Greyson). I thought that was totally cute and I haven't heard that before.

After naming the fetus "Wow". We realized that they could be initials. We like Oak for a middle name. Boyfriend and I both have last names that start with w. Probably gonna hyphen. Who's name goes first?

So we've been mostly joking about names now that we think they are likely girl/boy twins, but I did bring up Oliver last night and DH likes it I'm so surprised as he liked zero names last time that I suggested. We'll see and I still have no clue on girls names, going to go look through the name lists and probably this whole thread and some others and try and get inspired!

Ok, so far here is my brainstorming for first names, I usually choose something pretty generic that goes well for middle names so I don't worry about those as much:

Chloe - it's pretty popular though, dunno
Julia - even though DH will probably nix it again as it is my late Aunt's name, but I like it!
