Walden Oak W-W
Walden October W-W

I was trying for a unisex name and really love these but can't quite get my head around it for a girl. Any thoughts?
I think Walden is actually really cute for a unisex name...at first it felt weird to me for a girl....but then it struck almost a fairy type chord with me. I have no idea whether or not that helps you though wink1.gif I also prefer Oak to October for a summerr baby.

Quinella, I think all of those names are really cute too..and they all kind of work together

Walden's cool. I feel like ya gotta be cool with Wally as a potential nickname though. Even if you dont call him/her Wally, others might? On the "W" names, I knew a girl in high school whose name (really it was her nickname) was Willie and I always thought it was such a cute name. It was short for Wilhelmina (silent second L so pronounced Willameena). I've seen her in recent years and she converted from Willie to Willa. I like Willie much better for a girl than boy thoughorngtongue.gif

If I heard the name Walden, I would probably first think boy. But don't let that stop you if you really love the name! My son's name is Nikola (after Nikola Tesla) and apparently many people think girl first with his name:)

I think boy for Walden but so many names could go either way now.  It might not be an issue when she is older (if you have a girl) but as a baby you would probably have to just say, "Her name is Walden, she's a girl."

We had been decided on Decker James long ago but people keep mentioning DJ.  I personally (sorry if you like it) detest initial names so I think we may switch it to Decker Lewis which is DHs middle name and MILs maiden name.

My little girl is Calliope (Ca-lie-oh-pee) Meadow, had she been a he, Boston Avery :)

We are having a tough time with this although we only discussed it once. Since we had the genetic testing (and super douper confirmation on gender) I think the brainstorming will have to begin. Our last name is also a first name and we initially thought we would do a first name with the same letter as the last, as mine now happens to be since marrying DH. He really really likes this idea, but I now realize that it was lucky that my first name was slightly similar to this last name. Any other way and I might have kept my previous name or hyphenated because it would sound weird.

We like ethnic names, probably since neither of ours are very ethnic (he's Kurt, I'm Jacqueline). We have a good friend with first name Vlatko which we love because its so unique and his last name also starts with a V. But our last does not jive we think. Also, it would be weird to name this child after him since DH and he are not that close.

All that said, I am open to suggestions if anyone has one for a boys name starting in J. There is a long list of common english J names which are mostly out due to negative associations (so far all mine!). The middle name will be a different letter, not sure yet but I am open to a family name there.

My family has a ton of very common names...and very few uncommon. My nephews are Archer and Shepard which still after 5 years, strike me as so very different. And I will not consider naming this child anything with my families name (again the negative connotation). The only one I was considering was James or Jack but its so common. Dhs family is also has very popular names, so no help there. I am waiting for a family tree for the previous 3 -4 generations to be sent, so maybe some help there... My mom suggested my fathers/older brothers name and I almost threw up. She can be so uncreative....

The other option is to ask for suggestions from family and friends (many of which are not English or American) but I hate doing that for the obvious reasons. Although my aunt named me, and I am glad she did! My mother had nothing good to suggest....so glad I am not Patience Prudence (maiden name was a P too!) which was all she came up with. I had a tough enough time growing up with Jacqueline!

Thanks for the feedback y'all. I have lots of bonds with October so I'm considering it BFP came in October for one.

JacquelineJ any luck with Internet name searches? That helped me since I narrowed down initials. Then a few just clicked.

I checked out nameberry.com which was pretty neat but had all the typical ho-hum names...at least that's what it came up with for my preferences.  I'll have to check into other ones but none I have seen so far have been much different.  I feel like I am hunting for a needle in a haystack.

With DD I had 5 names picked out, and as the due date got closer, that names got narrowed down to 3.  When I meant her, I knew what her name should be.  For my son I had no names picked out yet.  But when I held him for the first and only time, it almost felt like someone whispered his name in my ear.  I had never considered that name before.  DD wants to name her new brother the same name, but I can't.  It just feels wrong in many ways.

I don't know if I could wait until the birth to name this one!

Jude

Judah

Jules

Jamin (though ive only ever known a girl with this name but I think it could def go gender neutral)

Jax

Jan

Jensen

Jovi (though now realizing the bon jovi connection, eek)

Julian (becoming pretty popular in my area)

Jethro

I love Juniper but that's pretty girly I guess

Thanks Loogiejane!  A few of those are on our list, with Julian being closest to the top.

But Julian is getting quite popular...also considering Julius but I like the lack of an 's' ending in Julian...

I like Julian too, though yeah it is getting more popular.

DH nixed Zoey, haven't brought any of the other girl names up yet, too busy with Christmas!

I thought DH and I agreed on the perfect girl name a few weeks ago but just last night when I brought it up again he nixed it. He said it was too hippyish. GRR! And it's so cute, and different yet not too out there or weird sounding.

The problem I run into is that we need to name after a deceased family member or friend. So just when I find the perfect name, even name combo, and there's nothing about it that's naming after anyone, it kind of takes of away from the perfection of it. It's frustrating.

Does it have to be EXACTLY the same name as the person, or can it be a variation? For example, my grandmothers name is Eileen and I mentioned that I liked the name Isla, to which my mother responded "isn't that nice, Nonnie would consider that being like naming the baby after her!"....so maybe that is something to think about.  It's a way to be creative but still tie the name into the family or friend.  I know some people want the name to be exact...another thing to think about is that several people in my family have actually changed their names, if you dig deeper into family history, it's possible that you could find some relatives have actually changed their names and that could give you more options...(my grandmother was born Eileen, changed it to Arlene, my great grandmother was Luiga, changed it to Angelina...there are a few others I can't think of too)...my family immigrated fairly recently, and so it's still common knowledge that they changed their names to be more "Americanized".

Oh it can definitely be a variation. Actually, my #1 girl name as of now is directly named after a distant family member....my mother's great aunt. So clearly Ive never met this woman and I don't know anything about her personality. All I know is that she lived on a farm with her husband Casper and resided in Ithaca, NY after selling the farm. Somehow I came across the name and decided I loved it and then weeks later found out from my mom we had a family member with the same name. I was psyched! Kept the info from my mom though as I don't discuss named with anyone but DH. I do like the idea of naming after someone I or DH knew or at least had met but that wouldn't be the case with this girl name I love. And the boy name I love also wouldn't be after any family members either. We'd focus on the middle name being after DH's bff that died in March, tragically and unexpectedly.

So yeah, variations could be even just using the first letter of someone's name. My grandmothers were Martha and Mayme and neither has been named for. But our (my) perfect girl name starts with a G. So we could do a middle name that starts with an M but the two that I think sound the best DH has either nixed or is unsure of.

Then the boy combo I came up with, with the boy first name I like paired with our friend's Hebrew name, DH said sounds too hebrew, cuz both names are super hebrew, I'll give him that. And it's not like we're religious or anything. But we do have a strong Jewish identity. But I like our friends hebrew name much better than his English name. His hebrew name translates to "king". And I kind of like keeping the Jewish spirit going.

Anyway, so there's more details than you probably wantedorngbiggrin.gif

orngtongue.gif ...It's always hard to know just how much detail is appropriate when you aren't talking directly with someone, lol! I really like the idea of names having an identity too, it makes them a lot more interesting, IMO...although my DS's name is just one that we liked with no real background behind it.

Timesway, Isla Lily is such a pretty name! I love the name Isla, but it's one that I think is becoming much, much more popular, so I am a little worried about it...the saving grace is that I think it would make my grandmother super happy if we used it...we will see.  We are finding out (hopefully) on the 3rd if we are having a boy or a girl, so I haven't gotten too worked up about anything yet :)

Updating my list, I think we'll go with Oliver for a boy, so if anyone has any middle name suggestions (I'd prefer 1-2 syllables, but anything is fine if you think it fits), I'd love them! I may just suggest we do Michael since that is DH's first name and then do my first name (Kathryn) for our girl. It would certainly make things easier smile.gif

Girl
Chloe - it's pretty popular though, dunno
Julia - even though DH will probably nix it again as it is my late Aunt's name, but I like it!
Melissa - Not popular now, was when I was a kid though
Olivia - only if we don't use Oliver as I'm not doing matching names for twins (either because DH changes his mind or we end up with 2 girls, U/S was not 100% on boy/girl)

Alice - I am liking this one a lot right now and it's not popular but easy to spell & pronounce
Molly - Not sure on this, nice name for a young child, dunno how well it works for an adult
Hannah - pretty popular, dunno
Elizabeth - Lots of good nicknames (Liz, Beth, etc.) but it is pretty long, not sure
Clara - I like this one a lot too and again it's not popular and easy to spell, pronunciation kind of varies on it though

Zoey - DH nixed it

A girlfriend of mine just named her baby Clara. It's old fashioned and timeless sounding. It's nice. A name that I always think of when I hear is Alice is Lucy which I am surprised hasn't boomed with popularity. I think Lucy is so cute.

I could throw out some boy middle name suggestions but do you have any preferences on the first letter?

Nope, probably not O (too matchy) and not L (too matchy with our last name). Otherwise, anything is fine smile.gif
