Remind me how a growth spurt feels like for mom?

Hi

I have a 7 day old and my milk came in on day 4th. He seemed very happy with my milk and was drinking well and all when suddenly I felt today that he is rooting to nurse non-stop. Read up a bit and sure enough.. there is a growth spurt that can happen on day 7th.

But this is the part that gets confusing. Last two days ..when he would nurse after 2-2.5 hrs..he would suck for a 3-4 letdowns and be satiated. Today..I am not even feeling that he is getting those 3-4 letdowns. It feels like an endless suck-suck-suck but sometimes swallow and then dry.. no rest and again nursing session..

It cannot be that my milk has been hit for no apparent reason at all..can it? :'(

I'm no expert, just had my first last October. I remember those early days of breastfeeding being really confusing. I also didn't feel my letdown a lot until later (maybe a month?) so it could be you aren't feeling it. How long does he nurse during a session? If you do not hear him swallowing he probably isn't getting it. Do you feel like your breasts ever get full? Make sure you are getting lots of calories and TONS of water. Way more than you think you need. Your body is burning so many calories making milk, you need to eat and drink very often to keep up your supply. I used to drink 8 glasses of water a day, plus whatever I normally had with meals (water, milk etc.)  Do you have any lactation consultants in your area? I saw them at our local hospital for free when I had trouble. Or La Leche League has peer mentors I think who have seen it a million times and can answer questions. Good luck. The first few months are really challenging, and breastfeeding doesn't always come easily.
