Workin' out mamas: how are you doing?

Thread Starter

I thought I'd start a thread to chat about the challenges (or joys, let's be positive!  loveeyes.gif) of working out while pregnant, and to encourage each other.

I'll probably be more positive when the second tri rolls around, but right now sure is a challenge for me.  While I've had horrid "morning" sickness all three times, in my second pregnancy, working out actually gave me a little time where I felt semi normal!  But this time, no dice.  In my 6th and 7th weeks I continued to run and do my normal strength activities and not only was it torture during, but I would feel AWFUL afterwards -- like vomiting, dizzy, unable to function for hours afterwards, etc.  So I stopped early in my 7th week..  Not working out, as someone who works out 3-4xs a week normally, is discouraging, especially given my insanely bad first tri diet of cheese sandwiches and watermelon!  But I tried again this week (I'm 10w3d) and I'm doing a little better.  No running yet, but I've been cycling between these two videos and enjoying them:

Erin O'Brien's Prenatal Fitness Fix

Element Prenatal Yoga

I am using these because they were available at the library, and I was especially curious about the Erin O'Brien one because her other prenatal video is ranked very highly on Amazon.  I do think she is kinda weird and charming, and the video was fun.  I'm not normally a video person, but I may have to be for now!

Not sure when I'll try running again...

How are the rest of you gals doing?

I don't have morning sickness, but I do have severe asthma, which impacts what I can do. I used to lift weights daily, and am a former firefighter, but I started this pregnancy off overweight and out of shape.

I renewed our family membership to the gym, so the kids and I swim, ride bikes and lift some weights about five days a week. So. Far I've lost about 28 lbs, which feels great.

Like you, Robina, I get dizzy (and have experienced numb lips) from forgetting to eat, so I'm trying to address that.

Looking forward to hearing how everyone is doing!

Love, p

I somehow jacked up my knee right around the time I found out I was pregnant. It's now to the point that I'm ready to try putting it through a run..but it's hard to get back in the habit after Bering off it for a few weeks AND trying to overcome the first trimester exhaustion. I'm going to try to do a 30 min run tomorrow morning.

I want to make myself do a Jillian Michaels video today, but after the terrible sleep I got last night I'll probably just nap instead. redface.gif

I'm 7 weeks. I really want to get back into running right away before I lose the progress I had made in building up my base. I was planning to train for a 10k before my BFP, but now my goal is just to maintain my ability to run for 5k. I can start training after I recover from birth.

ETa: oh, and at the end of the month I'm registered for a course on leading group fitness classes. I'm hoping to get certified before the end of the year, so I can apply to work part time for the city recreation department or the Y. I'm also hoping to sign up for a water fitness prenatal class or something too. I figure I might not want to be running too much in the third trimester, especially if my knee can't handle the extra impact of the extra weight, but that water fitness and water running would eliminate the impact problem.

The morning sickness the last two weeks was so bad that I really haven't done much. Two weeks ago I did 3 workouts that week and last week I only did one. I feel great today though and have been for a few days so I think I will try to fit in a run today. I'm 10 weeks.

Morning sickness has been improving for me.  I was rock climbing alot before I found out I was pregnant, but I haven't had the energy to get back to it.  I've been doing a half hour "flow" prenatal yoga video I found on youtube that I really like, and I've been dancing around my living room with DD and doing lots of bodyweight squats.  I'm 8 weeks.

I had turned our garage into a crossfit gym this past Fall and I train two friends out there three times a week. Since getting my BFP and having low hcg at first I cut back on the weight lifting and anything involving jumping that first month to make sure I didn't hurt anything. I stuck to kettlebells, walking and bodyweight movements like squats. Now that I've seen and heard the heartbeat I know I can start ramping up my workouts again but now I'm just exhausted and nauseas all the time. LOL! I will keep getting out there with the girls, and keep doing what I can until my energy comes back. I'm going to pick up weightlifting again but keep the lbs much lower than I'm used to.

Tiff- fellow home crossfitter here!!! I was called off from all excercise @ 8wk, supposedly I can get back into it but I am winded just going up my stairs, cannot imagine doing a WOD!?! (the day before I was told not to even lift my 36lb son I had been doing 1RM cleans and deadlifts! OOPS! and I PR'ed!?)

I like to bike to work (10 ks each way ) and before the BFP was hoping ot get up to 100ks per week.  Now I've decided to aim for 40-50ks.  I find, though, some mornings I get up and I just can't face it.  I've noticed shortness of breath even while walking, let alone anything more than that.

I also need to start swimming again.  I was doing 2-3 times a week, I'd like to do at least once a week with the cycling.

Eeps! Be careful lady. =P I can't wait to get my energy back so I can continue doing stuff. For now I've just been watching the girls run through the WODs I programmed. It kind of sucks.

ha ha...well I walk here and there...and I ran half a mile once lol...but that is it. I need to keep walking...but with the spotting I want to make sure all is well with that before I go all out. I probably wont run too much anymore...well not a mile anyway...just a lap (1/4 mile) here and there maybe....My half mile run wore.me.OUT lol

I am 8 weeks, 2 days today and feeling ok so far.  I ran a 5K with my husband and a few of my older kids on Sunday.  My farthest run this pregnancy was on Friday I ran 8 miles with my husband.  Went nice and slow but felt great after.  I tried to run through my last pregnancy but stopped because I had horrible "morning" sickness at night.  I am starting to feel it again this pregnancy but I don't want to give up.  Went to go run on the treadmill today but one of the kids must've taken out the safety key so treadmill is a no go until we find it.  Hopefully I'll get a run in tomorrow.  Thanks for starting this thread!

5 K cycle on Monday and a swim last night.  Hoping to do 10 ks today!

Yay! Finally got out for a short run, and not even two minutes in the world felt like such a better place! <3

I then had like a 2.5 hour nap...but it was worth it. Actually, my DD is gotten pretty independent about getting readyf or nap times. So she got herself ready for HER nap, then she tucked ME in. It was the sweetest thing.

I swam for an hour today. It was the first time I've done something in almost a week. It did feel good when I did it but I sure am tired now.  Tomorrow I'll bike with a small group I ride with  and then hopefully on Friday run. My goal is a long Olympic distance triathlon in 3 1/2 weeks. I'm hoping haven't lost two months in the 3 weeks I've had to pretty much take off and will be able to finish.

Hopefully I can pick back up a little after my scan tomorrow morning....I'm so drained on energy though I'm not sure I can move my legs fast enough to consider it a run lol.
