autumn equinox celebration- need ideas

We are hosting a small get together with some of our homeschool friends next week and I wanted ideas for a thoughtful celebration. I was thinking of having the kids make lanterns and candles and have food of course, but wanted something a little more thoughtful..... maybe telling the story of st. Michael? Too soon in the season? I wanted some ideas to slow the kids down to appreciate the change of seasons etc. We will decorate too.

Kids are 8, 6, 5, 4 and 2.....

I don't think it's too soon.  Fall starts creeping in August, if you watch for it.   Rhythm of the Home has some good things up in their fall issue right now.  Also, Rhythm of the Family has good ideas for each month and you could take a couple and compile them.

Well Autumn starts next Saturday, so I don't think it's so outrageous to start Fall stories if you won't be meeting again in Fall.

I love Waldorf festivals. The Michaelmas festival is traditionally celebrated on sept 29th.
It is all about harvest and saying good night to the summer, welcome the cooler weather, bring in the Michaelmas energy into your home. He is the angel of courage and stength that helps you in the winter months. Make dragons with bees wax or paper machet. Make harvest foods and bread in the shape of a dragon. Cook on a fire or Coles BBQ. Field games tha t support courage and strength.

Wet felt balls that can be shooting stars with ribbons on the end. Do a puppet show about st George and the dragon . Bring out harvest colors and crafts.:cold
