We picked our house based on the excellent public school system, so really for us, the decision was already made. I went to catholic schools up until high school, and would not send my kids there. The other private schools in our area are very expensive, and I would rather save the money for college. In addition, the private schools are not at all diverse, which I have a problem with.

My dd turned five in August and went to K that fall. She's in first grade now and is thriving.
