We are not off-grid in our new house we built on our property. (That was a difficult decision to make, but in the end on-the-grid won out because we would have had to take nearly every tree on the front half of our 10 acres, and we would still be running a generator in the winter.)
Anyway......
Instead of purchasing a new fridge, we are using the Servel (Dometic) dual-fuel fridge we had in the scrappy cabin that was here. At the end of a long, sparsely populated private road, the power outages are frequent and long, and I wanted to be as self-sufficient as possible without needing a generator. I also liked it because it was absolutely silent. I thought I would regret the small size, but it has been a very easy transition.
Because the air is not circulated, it can be tricky remembering not to put the cucumber slices right under the cooling thingamadeelies, or the soymilk on fridge door where it can be just enough too warm (if I turn it down to avoid spoiled cucumbers.) Those thingamadeelies can really build up the frost when the weather is warm and humid. But that's alright, I needed to clean the fridge anyway. So, sometimes tricky to find just the right setting.
I think they are still pretty spendy, like 1300 or more. But I really like it. (We also have a smallish chest freezer.)
I don't have a comparison as to how much energy it takes. Sorry.
