Songs for Divorce, Break-up, or just Being Independent

Thread Starter

I'm trying to put together a playlist of songs that are good for divorce or break-ups.  Things that support being independent and strong.

What I've come up with so far:

He Thinks He'll Keep Her, by Mary-Chapin Carpenter

Stronger, by Kelly Clarkson

Cinderella, by the Cheetah Girls (OK, this is just about being independent, not about a break-up.  But the line about "I'd rather rescue myself" resonates with me right now.)

I need input.   Please share your ideas!

Thanks!

"But Not Tonight" by Depeche Mode.  Not specifically about breakups, and we don't know why he's alone in the song, but the verse "Here on my own/ All on my own/ How good it feels to be alone tonight/ And I haven't felt so alive in years...." has always felt so good to sing.

I second "I Will Survive".  The classic bad-ass breakup song.

Taylor Swift's got a song, I think it's called "White Horse." It's a good break up song, though.

"Landslide" Fleetwood Mac-- maybe not exactly about a break-up but at least I think it's about growing apart from someone

42 year-old chiming in here to say I really like Eminem when I am in the right mood.  Sometimes a righteous does of anger and profanity are very therapeutic for me.

The entire "All That You Can't Leave Behind" album by U2 was a lifesaver when I was going through a divorce.  Good luck!

I heard a great one the other day.  "Catch my breath" by Kelly Clarkson.

Even though I don't always like country, I just loved these lyrics so much, combined with the upbeat nature of the songs...that these songs helped me a lot with being independent and letting a guy "go." All songs are by a country artist named Jo Dee Messina:

-Bye Bye ("Got a lead foot down on my accelerator and the rearview mirror torn off, cause I aint never lookin back, you can count on that")

-Fool Hearted Man ("you're the kinda man a woman thinks she can change, but the only thing changin is my way of thinkin")

-Stand Beside Me ("I've gotta be true to my heart, this time")

Looking at a lyric site, she has a few others that look good too, that I haven't heard: Who's Crying Now, ....others.

Anyways, even though they are a little corny, they REALLY helped me!!!!!!! She is kinda the queen of the "see ya, dude" thing. It helps me not mope, because of the attitude.

Oh, speaking of country, there is that Carrie Underwood song where she keys the guy's truck: "Before He Cheats." Even if it doesn't apply to your situation, the cheating, etc..... sometimes it helps to imagine going nuts on a guy's car (or anything he cares too much about). If you are the type that likes to get the anger out. :)

It is not even my personality at all; I am a very logical person. But for some reason, I don't do well with the emotional-type stuff when I am trying to find my "voice." I just like listening to songs about a woman that goes out and kicks some a$$, no matter how ridiculous. So try it!!!!!!!! For some reason, most of those songs are country. The Kelly Clarkson ones are all good.

Also, if you don't normally listen to country, sometimes it feels good to do something that is TOTALLY new and different, because it helps establish a new piece of you (or at least a new mood) that has nothing to do with what your old routine was. So listen to different radio stations, watch different TV networks, go to a different chinese restaurant than usual (even if you don't like them much, at least it is something DIFFERENT and NEW and that's the point. You don't have to change who you are, just mix up your life so things feel different and you are experiencing new things, however small or subtle. Maybe you will like something you never thought you'd like. It especially seems to help me if it was something my ex would have hated, and even if I had no strong opinion, it was at least like a "you don't control what I do").

For example, I had an ex that was really "hipster," and he would always roll his eyes at mainstream movies that were just stupid humor, so I learned to enjoy them for what they were. If your ex was all about burgers, try a vegan restaurant, etc.
