I am a bit sleep deprived and confused so sorry if this doesn't make sense. But I was wondering if mamas can post a bit about what their newborn's sleeping habits are like?
Mora will NOT nurse to sleep. I mean, she will doze while nursing but the second the nipple is out of her mouth she wakes up. She also is very, very hard to keep asleep. During the day she will only sleep on someone's chest. I can't seem to nurse her sidelying and have her stay asleep so I can nap when she naps, or nurse her to deep sleep then put her down. So DH and I take turns having her on our chest during the day in a quiet room so DD1 doesn't wake her up. I can't sleep with her on my chest. So I read. DH watches TV with headphones. The other one of us who doesn't have the baby on our chest takes care of the house and DD1.
At night I nurse her then give her to DH. He swaddles her and bounces her on the birthball while I read DD1 stories in her bed. Then we switch. He puts swaddled sleeping newborn in the king bed with me and he goes to sleep with DD1 in her bed. I get anxiety because I know I am in for a looooong night and I am just so sleepy!
The baby will immediately start waking up after DH puts her down in bed. I nurse her sidelying then let her doze with the nipple in her mouth. I slowly pull it out eventually and she starts waking up again. I put the nipple near her mouth and sometimes that is enough to have her settle down again, otherwise I put her on her side propped up with a pillow and pat her butt and back and gently rock her for about 15-30 minutes. Eventually she will fall asleep and I will pass out. However she still wakes up off and on grunting. I have such a hard time sleeping through the grunting. She seems to have her eyes closed but she is not still and for sure not quiet! I usually nurse her again about every 1-3 hours, but she will only take a few sucks. I cannot get her to take any more milk. At around 3am she does a big poo and then she is WIDE awake. I nurse her again (she remains wide awake just staring at me) then I go get DH. He changes her diaper and reswaddles her while I pee. Then he takes her downstairs to bounce again because there is no way I can get her back to sleep at this point while I pass out in DD1's bed for a few minutes. When I hear him come up the stairs I got back to the king bed and he puts her back in the bed with me and the whole thing starts again....
This was very different from DD1 where she would wake, I'd nurse her, she'd be right back to sleep again for 1-3 hours. I don't understand why this baby doesn't stay asleep with nursing nor what the restless grunting is all about all night. She doesn't cry, she is just very, very awake. So I don't think she's in pain with gas or hungry or cold...Just not sleeping!?
I'm curious to hear what your days/nights are like as far as sleep. I really hope this changes soon. I had imagined a family bed but there is no way we could function with the baby's restless sleep all night. I'm happy that DD1 and to a lesser extent DH are getting sleep at night in the other room but I really need hope for myself!
