how long is too long for diarrhea?

DS has had diarrhea for nearly a week now, coupled with very red and painful diaper rash. how long should i treat it at home before we go see a doctor?

You don't say how old he is. But in any case, no reason not to take him in if you're worried. Call the office and ask if they think he should be seen.

usually doc wants to see the child if symptoms persist more than 5 days. mostly to check for dehydration. or keep in phone contact instead of taking him in and keep tabs on his dehydration through you.

On my experience, 3rd day is my limit... diarrhea is still very dangerous. So keep your DH hydrated, increase fluid intake and ask for medication from your drs...oresol is also great. Gatorade might also be considered if it is okey with his age.

I hope you've been to the doctor. For infants, 3 days is about the limit. For older kids 3-5. Even for adults if it had gone on longer than 5 days, I think being seen would be good.
