Recommendations on resources for age appropriate expectations....

Hi all,

Just wondering if someone could recommend some books/websites/etc for helping me understand what age appropriate behavior expectations are for my LO.  For example, she's 10 months old and is starting to scream a lot when unhappy, i.e when put down, something is taken away, etc.  I don't want to reinforce the screaming, but don't think she is old enough to be expected to be quiet before being picked up.  But I have no clue WHEN that would be an appropriate expectation for her..... I guess I am looking for books on infant/toddler development.... Thoughts anyone?

I sm trying to remember what we did with my six year old when she was this age (my baby is not here yet).  Other than the typical What to Expect- First Year,  I can't think of books, but I think the recommendation for behavior modification in a 10 month old is distraction

Here is what I would do:

Baby screams- hold your ears and dramatically and loudly say "owww- that hurts mommy's ears when you scream like that".  She will probably stop to stare at your reaction.  You can reinforce it by telling her "thank you" or "good girl " or something and picking her up.

I think I remember dealing with baby biting when nursing in a similar way with DD1- over dramatically showing that it hurt.  I think babies get this.  It is also the way to train puppies not to bite, but I think it could work for your issue.  Good Luck.

I love the Dr. Sears Baby Book, and I'm pretty sure there's a whole section on age appropriate responses.  My friend also gave me the first year book from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which goes month by month with precisely those expectations.  Good luck!

Thanks ladies! I will check out The Baby Book - I have it, but hadn't looked in there...

Yes, thank you for the reminder on distraction!  So simple but I forget to use it....
