Hypothyroidism

Got a call from my OB's office yesterday stating my lab work shows I have hypothyroidism. Neither my husband or I were surprised by this, which I think caught the girl off guard. Anyway, they said a specialist will be calling me (an Endo I think?) to set up an appt regarding it. I'm not sure what to expect but I'll happily accept help getting my thyroid in order. I asked our family doctor a few years ago to check my thyroid and she said all was well even though I suspected it wasn't. Perhaps this pregnancy finally pushed my numbers in the right range to be diagnosed? We radically cleaned up our diet and I work out regularly but I've still sat at the same weight for a very long time so I'm hoping this will help get me back to where I feel I should be.

Anyone have experience with it?

You may have likely had problems before.  It's VERY common for doctors to see a normal TSH and call everything good, when TSH alone is a horrible number to rely on.

Lots of women have thyroid issues after previous pregnancies.  I knew I had an issue and went to my OB for testing, who deemed me "normal" based on TSH.  Thankfully my FIL who is an MD an knows me better took me seriously enough to test me further, and despite having a normal TSH, T4, and T3, my TPO antibodies were very elevated, indicating Hashimoto's, which may have caused my miscarriages.  Now my TSH looks "wonky" during pregnancy but we are on top of it and that's the reason.

I strongly suspect I have a thyroid issue as well, even though tests always come back fine. I finally saw an herbalist and they gave me a natural thyroid activator and I was starting to notice improvement... but then I got preggo and stopped taking it because pills made me gag. Now that I am feeling better I should probably start again.

According to the old natural way of testing for hypothyroid, I totally have it. I have a book that says if your basal body temp is low (can't remember the exact number... maybe below 97.1?), that indicates a thyroid problem. My normal BBT is 96.3, and sometimes it's lower. I've even had temps in the 95 area!

I'm glad you are able to get treatment for it now! Another friend of mine was treated medically for it, and said it was like night and day!

Thanks for the responses! I'm not sure what to expect but I'm hoping for the best. I have my appt on Tuesday and will be anxiously awaiting it until then.

My BBT was my most obvious indicator.  Only my MIL took that seriously, and thankfully she was able to have some influence with FIL helping me test for things.

I have it.

My mother has hypothyroidism, along with my grandfather and my two aunts. It is definitely hereditary and I have suspected for a while that I have hypothyroidism as well. About two years ago, my general practitioner tested me, but didn't find anything wrong. My sister has mentioned several times that there is another type of test that should be done if there is reason to believe that someone does indeed have it, but has the first test come back normal. I have almost every single symptom indicating hypothyroidism, but my first test came back fine. I let my doctor know this time that I thought I may have it, as it can effect your progesterone levels, but I haven't heard anything back yet. I guess we will see...
