Hi Mamas,
I really could use some advice. My daughter is 5 and a half months old. About a month and a half ago I left some wet organic cotton prefolds I had just washed (in charlies & biokleen oxy bleach) out overnight. I was just so exhausted and it was 2 in the morning and I couldn't bring myself to line dry 'em or bring them down to the apartment building's laundry room. They were out wet for about 5 hours before I put them in a hot cycle in the commercial dryer.
Shortly after that I noticed a small irritation on my babe's bum, which then got worse. I went to the ped and she told me it was an infected rash and had me put bacitracin on it and use disposables. It cleared up within a few days and I kept her in disposables since. Since then I've disinfected our whole diaper stash twice just in case- both times using hot water and grapefruit seed extract with baking soda or vinegar (a method I found online).
Problem is, any time I put a cloth diaper on her the irritation comes back in the same exact spot. I notice overnight is particularly bad because of the prolonged wetness. If I put zinc cream on the rash and keep her in disposables it goes away in a few days. If I put her in cloth after it clears (and I waited a month to make sure it was fully healed) it comes right back. I am at a loss here. Do you think I need to boil all the pre-folds? Use bleach? I really hate the thought of having to give up cloth diapering but if we have to do so to keep my baby's bum happy then I guess we'll do what we have to do.
Would love to hear any advice or ideas you may have.
Thank you,
Anneca
PS- Mamas, please excuse any lack of clarity in my harried writing, I'm typing with one hand a sleep-deprived brain, lol.
