Hi all,

Not sure if this is the best place to post, I also put it in the healthy eating section. We are soon to offer DS whole milk. We get ours from our neighbor farmer and we drink it raw. Should we offer it raw to our 1 year old or pasteruize it at home? Ped thinks I'm crazy and our natruo thinks raw is the way to go. thoughts, suggesstions?

I've not done this yet, but if I were to give DD dairy it would be raw!

Why the need to do cow's milk at all?

Our decision to do cows milk is twofold. First off I will state....we do not beleive that dairy is bad for us. We are all B blood types and tolerate dairy VERY well, infact we eat almost NO meat but consume dairy on a daily basis. Me and DH eat mostly raw cheese and some milk, but neither of us are huge milk drinkers. i know we are the only species that consumes other mammals milk, but we are also the only mammal with the technology to do so easily.

As far as for the little one. My son who will be 1 in November was a former 27 weeker, and unfortunately due to significant respitory issues could not nurse and has been bottle fed cow milk formula for the past 4 months, once I couldn't keep up with him by expressing breastmilk. We really want to get him off formula bc of all the fillers and start offering him whole milk asap, whihc will be in the coming weeks. We can not do soy bc it is not good for preemies bc of their bone formation, so the other option would be goat. We have a neighbor who has two beautiful jersey cows, who can supply our family with all the organic raw milk we need, for only $3 a 1/2 gallon (cheaper than the grocery store) so this is how we came to the decision to do cow milk.

Do you think raw is ok for a 1 year old?

We milk our own cows (Jerseys) so all our children drink only raw milk. I began giving to our baby at 12 months old. We believe milk is incredibly healthy for you, and that pasteurized milk is dead milk. I think raw is wonderful for your baby and you are lucky to have access to it! smile.gif

I've happily given raw milk to both my kids around a year. Even better is making raw milk kefir, both of my kids love that too (we mix a little OJ with it).

So reassuring to hear this. My family loves milk too, actually we enjoy raw dairy very much and we all tolerate it very well, not upset tummies here. And we don't eat meat for the most part so it is an important way for us to get protein. I offered DS some the other day and he devoured it!
