I had no idea the even existed: http://www.schoolnutrition.org/Level2_NSLW2012.aspx?id=16976, but apparently, this week is National School Lunch Week.

I remember hot school lunches as the equivalent of Swanson TV dinners.

Have they gotten better? Do your kids get the school lunch? If not, what do you do for lunch?

Nope. I pack DS1's lunch every morning. He's in kindergarten, and while not that picky of an eater, would likely *NOT* eat most things that are 'served' for lunch. *I* wouldn't eat most of them. And yeah, from what I understand they are pre-made meals that are microwaved.

Yes, DS buys lunch every day.  They have vegetarian options daily.  Locally grown produce is featured monthly.  The milk and juice is organic.  No fries, ever.  Whole grain pasta, rolls, and tortilla wraps.  I definitely think he eats better than I did at that age!

No..I pack her lunch everyday for Kindergarden..She is gluten, dairy, soy and apple free..They only serve the deepfried glutened crud...They are pretty proud to put on the menu that they do offer a vegetarian choice though in the form of a peanut butter sandwich shake.gif

No.  DS is in 8th grade, and says the food is yucky.  He is a little on the picky side, but mainly because he prefers real, homemade food than typical "children's food".  He has never really liked fast food.  He has always liked the "grown-up" option, esp. salads.  He would just not eat for the whole day, so I pack him a lunch every day, even on pizza day.

My kids had a homemade packed lunch everyday but Friday. Friday is pizza day and they like that! I figure trashy food is okay in small doses.

I would love it if they ate school lunch once in a while to get a break from the lunch making, but nothing doing. Neither of them will touch it. Luckily they are starting to help out with lunches now!

My ds is in morning pre-k, so he gets breakfast every day. We're working on making the best choices, lol
