How does one go about becoming a homebirth midwife?

How do you go about finding someone to apprentice with? I will be moving out of state where i will know no one in the birth community so im not sure how i should go about this.

Where will you be moving to? Post something here on Mothering in that Tribal Area asking about other student midwives. Connect with the local doula group or attachment parenting group. Find, or start a midwifery study group, put the word out at co ops or health food stores. Talk to women with children about who they birthed with and where. Making good community connections will help you find the birth community. Attend prenatal yoga classes and talk to mommas and the instructors. If there are any local midwifery organisations you can join that is a good way for the midwives to be able to get to know you. Good luck, hope it all falls into place for you!

I will be moving to Connecticut. Do most midwives start out as doulas?

I didn't but I know lots of midwives/students who did. It is one way of making connections in the birth world in a new place, I admire doula's so much, they have so much to offer women who are birthing in hospital environments. I personally find it too difficult to bite my tongue.

I am presently a birth doula in New Jersey and looking simply to increase my knowledge. Are there midwifry programs in New Jersey?
