My best friend is having a baby in beginning of January. I am at the end of Feb. I can't say for sure what she plans to do about vaccinations but at this time I believe she will do them for her daughter. I will be watching her baby 4-5 days a week. If I do not vaccinate can my baby catch what her babies vaccinations are for? I was reading about "shedding" after a vaccine. Is that only the live viruses or what? I am concerned since they will be spending so much time together. Am I making sense!

post #2 of 1010/23/12 at 2:28pmyou're making total sense. if it's the live vaccine, then yes, shedding can happen and it's been known for kids to catch illnesses that other people were vaccinated against.

Flumist does shed, not certain on the shot.
She wouldn't be vaxxed with smallpox, but yes it sheds and can wreak havoc.

I'm pretty positive smallpox isn't on the schedule for children these days.post #5 of 1010/23/12 at 5:32pmkids can't get flumist til they're 2 as well....
post #6 of 1010/24/12 at 12:24pmoh, i wasn't including it as an example of the shots, just of instances that have been admitted to have happened.
polio - right now in Nigeria and spreading to Indonesia, there's a massive epidemic of mutated polio virus that started in 2007. just this year, 124 children have died as a result of polio virus from the oral (live virus) vaccine getting into the water from vaccinated kids and spreading to unvaccinated kids, where it mutated within their bodies to something health officials cannot control.
also, children are not vaccinated against smallpox - but military personnel and other ppl who work overseas (ie, technical engineers and the like) do.post #7 of 1010/25/12 at 11:22amHealthy children catching a disease is very very rare bordering on unheard of. While we know some vaccines shed, for most of the there are zero cases of actual illness as a result, or the only known cases are in immunocomprimised people. My daughter is fully vaccinated, right down to the flu shot, she goes to a day care owned by a woman whose daughter is unvaccinated (and attends the daycare), it has never been an issue. Ymmv.post #8 of 1010/25/12 at 11:23amAnd I'm sure pp knows this, but just for clarity, we use inactivated polio vaccine in the us, so shedding isn't an issue.post #9 of 1010/25/12 at 12:31pm- Mirzam

I have had two unvaccinated babies (now unvaccinated teens), and I never gave it a moment's worry about their contacts with newly vaccinated babies and children. The chances of them catching anything from a newly vaccinated child was extremely low bordering on the non-existant. If you don't vax, then you have to come to peace with the fact (if you this is your belief) that your child may be at risk from a VPD from a child that has had a "live" virus vaccine.
See Rrrrrachel, we actually agree on something!
