burp cloths- what is the best?

This is probably a pretty petty thing, but I cannot find a burp cloth that I like.  With my first 2 girls I used gerber prefolds and loved them.  I must have thrown them out b/c I cannot find them.  I went and bought a new pack (dozen) of gerber prefolds and washed them multiple times.  They must have changed them in the last 5 years b/c they suck!  They were horribly pilled and actually ripped along some seams.  The middle padding bunched up- just horrible.  I threw the whole pack away.

Then I went on amazon looking for reviews and bought a pack of osocozy flats and washed them today.  They are huge and really... flat.  Not absorbant like a prefold.  Ugggh, I'm really annoyed and not sure what to try.  I hate wasting money on this stuff.  But I remember burp cloths being ESSENTIAL with my last 2.  So I really want something that works and that is soft and the right size.   Any suggestions?

Fold the flats a few times.  Surprisingly, after washing a bunch of times, these can be pretty absorbent.

If you want nice prefolds to use as burp clothes, you can usually buy some "diaper service quality" (DSQ) prefolds from places like cottonbabies.com or kellyscloset.

They often have free shipping codes so you can just order a few.

I have read that using white vinegar in your washer's rinse cycle increases absorbency, FWIW.

I use the gerber prefolds, but, after washing once in vinegar, I sewed another peice of fabric over the middle so it isn't bunched anymore. I edged that second peice with lace: its a pretty burp cloth on top of being more useful. I saw someone at a farmers market recently who did something similar, only using a contrasting third fabric to edge the middle peice instead of lace. For the non- sewer, I would hit up a consignment sale or buy cotton babies diapers, Indian prefolds or classic prefolds from  CB are all AWESOME as diapers and would work great as burp cloths too.

I love OsoCozy flats! They just need to be washed a *ton* with a *ton* of soap to strip out the stiff cotton oils. I used them as dipes with #3. They would have made lovely burpcloths!

I've always been terrible at using burp cloths, so I don't. DS1 projectile vomited everywhere for-ever, and I *still* couldn't get the hang of the burp cloth thing. lol.gif I'm just too uncoordinated!

They have softened up a bit after a few washes.  I just think that as burp cloths they are too large and cumbersome.  I'm used to the prefolds that are the perfect size.   I think that having to fold them will be annoying, but maybe I'll end up liking them?

I did order a few indian perfolds from cottonbabies- thanks for the suggestions.  At least I can just buy a few and if they work out, I can get more later- with free shipping.

Thin prefolds work well for me, but I find normal thickness prefolds too thick.  My favourite burp clothes are generally either large cotton flannel flats (well washed and absorbant) or cotton gauze flats.  Yes, the gauze flats are very, very thin, but I like that I can fold them to the size and thickness I need.  If they are well-washed, they are nice and absorbant.

I just used the GMD prefolds for DS's spit up. We would just leave the size larger than what he was actually wearing as diapers laying in random places around the house. Then we'd pretty much have one nearby when the spit up came out!
