new carseats for 5 and 8 year olds

I haven't been up on carseats for 2.5 years. My 8 year old has been in the same high back booster for that time and my 5 year old daughter has been in a radian.

Now I am looking for a low-back booster for my son because he is getting too tall for his booster. I forgot the name of it. It's a Big Kid something and it has soft cushioning that he likes the reading lights. He loves the features. Unlike most kids his age, he wants to stay in his seat. So whatever new seat I buy, I would like it to be very comfortable. However, I definitely want it to be a low back. (I don't expect a reading light. He can use a booklight instead.)

My daughter's car seat is expiring in February and my husband wants to move her to my son's high back booster. I don't want to do that because she will not be trustworthy enough to sit properly according to my standards. I know this because she did borrow and use his booster on two short trips this summer to/from the airport. So I want her harnessed. And I want the ease-of-use on the new seat to be exceptional so that my husband has nothing to complain about. And it would make sense to get a combo seat that can convert to a booster in a year or two.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Oh, and did I mention that I don't want the most expensive seats because my husband will balk. He thinks we are done buying car seats...

Take the back off the Big Kid and use it backless. :)

For your daughter, look at the Graco Nautilus or Evenflo SecureKid.

Are you certain the Radian is expiring in February?  They have a retroactive 8 year expiration on them, and they weren't in production in February of 2005.

Okay, I am an idiot. I originally thought I needed a new low back booster because I would be giving my daughter my son's high back. Then when I decided I should buy her a new seat, I forgot that my son would therefore not need a new seat. redface.gif

And I didn't know the Radian had a retroactive expiration. It was manufactured Feb 2007 so I assumed it expired in Feb 2013.

Now, I need nothing.  Thanks, all.
