I haven't been up on carseats for 2.5 years. My 8 year old has been in the same high back booster for that time and my 5 year old daughter has been in a radian.
Now I am looking for a low-back booster for my son because he is getting too tall for his booster. I forgot the name of it. It's a Big Kid something and it has soft cushioning that he likes the reading lights. He loves the features. Unlike most kids his age, he wants to stay in his seat. So whatever new seat I buy, I would like it to be very comfortable. However, I definitely want it to be a low back. (I don't expect a reading light. He can use a booklight instead.)
My daughter's car seat is expiring in February and my husband wants to move her to my son's high back booster. I don't want to do that because she will not be trustworthy enough to sit properly according to my standards. I know this because she did borrow and use his booster on two short trips this summer to/from the airport. So I want her harnessed. And I want the ease-of-use on the new seat to be exceptional so that my husband has nothing to complain about. And it would make sense to get a combo seat that can convert to a booster in a year or two.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Oh, and did I mention that I don't want the most expensive seats because my husband will balk. He thinks we are done buying car seats...
