Ah ha! You've found it...The ROVING Holiday Helper thread! "

Perhaps you've heard about a little program we have here at MDC called the Holiday Helper Program? Since 2003, MDC members have been reaching out to each other around the holidays to make sure that families in need (FINs), here at MDC, get the chance to celebrate the season as well.

Want to help a Family in Need?

Here are some ways to help:

1. Make a list of what you have available. Gently used toys or books or clothes? Are you willing to go shopping to pick out a special gift for a young child or another mama? Check the "Master Needs List" or the individual family profiles in the Families in Need forum. if you have items to offer that don't appear on the "Master Needs List," please make a post listing the items in the "I Have Available" thread. Items provided may be new or used; gently used items are very welcome as long as they are in good condition.

2. Spread the word about that the Holiday Helper Program. Some ways to do that:

  • Post and suggest a title for this thread. Something intriguing, something outrageous, something funny, something that pique your interest and make you open the thread. We will rotate thread thread as we move this thread from forum to forum. We want to generate interest in this thread.

  • Bump up this thread.

  • Add the Holiday Helper smile to your signature:

More information is posted in the Holiday Helper forum; check it out!

Just wanted to add this tidbit, because I know some people might be shy about applying.

Quote:
Who will see my FIN information?
For privacy and security, your username will only be available to two MDC Administrators (Cynthia Mosher & AdinaL) and MDC Holiday Helper Moderators (QueenoftheMeadow and HappyHappyMommy). In an effort to keep usernames private, we ask that you communicate to the central coordinator for HH and the HH moderators. Your list of needs and family statement will be posted in the HH forum for everyone to see, along with your FIN number and state or province of residence. Your name (not your MDC username) and address will be released to helpers who offer to send items to you.

If your family is in need, here's some information on how to sign up:

Quote:

Am I eligible to be a family in need (FIN)?
* FIN must have "significant financial need"
* FIN must have 500 posts as of October 22, 2012 *and* 1 year of consistently active membership from October 22, 2011 to October 22, 2012. (Note from HHM: the definition of "active membership" was removed on 11/3.)
* FIN sign up will begin Noon Pacific Daylight Time October 22, 2012, and the first 50 complete, and eligible, applications will be chosen with the next 50 held aside for round two if we have enough families with needs met.
* Fully completed forms, including first and last name will be given priority.

How can I sign up to be a Family In Need (FIN)?
FIN sign up will begin at Noon Pacific Daylight Time October 22, 2012 and must be received by November 9, 2012, 5 pm Pacific Daylight Time. (Note from HHM: the application period was extended on 11/3.) You can sign up by PM'ing AdinaL, with the filled out 2012 HOLIDAY HELPER APPLICATION form (please copy and paste the form below). Applications will be dealt with on a first come first-served basis. Please be sure to list both first and last name and physical mailing address. Completed forms with specific information will be given priority.
Further information and the application form is available on the Holiday Helper FAQ thread!

Thanks for asking! Profiles for FINs and the Master Needs List are posted now here. For those who can offer help to a FIN, there is a HH facilitator listed at the top of the FIN profile; please let the HH facilitator know the help you are able to provide. If you have something to offer and you are not sure which FINs might need it, the "I Have Available" thread will be posted in the next few days and you can post what you have to offer on that thread! Finally, the application period is still open, so please keep checking the profiles and the Master Needs List as we are continuing to add FINs.

Thank you to all for spreading the joy this holiday season!

WootWoot! This will be the last extension for becoming a Family in Need, so if you've been trying to decide, now is the time to do it. We want to be able to help as many families as possible have a great holiday season! :)

And please come on over to the I have available thread. There are so many ways to help this year: used item, new items, maybe a few dollars that you'd like to join up with another MDC member to get a gift card or something a Family in Need could use, or you can try to match what you have to a FIN in the Master Needs List. Perhaps you belong to a church group or a play group that is looking to sponser a family. The MDC Holiday Helper Family is a great way to get involved, and to make a difference in your MDC community.

Will there be a separate thread/posting for FIN in Canada? Or are there not any this year?

The logistics of shipping within Canada is easier, especially for certain items.

Thank you.
