Q about letters of rec for grad school

Thread Starter

Hi everyone. I just have a quick question.

I've been a SAHM for 7 years.  I've done a little professional work here and there.  Mostly, I've volunteered at my kids' schools.

I'm applying for a Master's in Education/Teaching Credential.  Is it ok to ask my child's teacher in whose class I volunteer to write me a letter of rec?  I'm so nervous about this and hate asking people to do stuff like this.  Is that crossing a line or is that ok?

Thanks!

I think it sounds fine, but if you feel uncomfortable about asking your child's current teacher, what about last year's? The relationship seems relevant (s/he has seen you in an educational setting with children and can evaluate your skills) so asking for a letter of recommendation seems like a normal request. If you think they won't have time to do it, maybe offer to give them some bullet points of what you think the most important points to cover would be? (I have totally had to write my own recos for past people who were well-intentioned but lazy/overworked.)

I think it's fine to ask, "Would you feel comfortable ..." and if s/he seems at all uncomfortable, then don't have her/him do it.
