I think that most of the sleep problems my LO has been having the last two months (she is now 6 months) could just be because of the paci. She used to sleep through but since 4 months she wakes multiple multiple times when the paci has fallen out. I then get up and give it back but she spends upto 15 mins playing with it, chewing it, throwing it etc. I think things would improve dramatically without it.
At bedtime she usually falls into a milk coma after her last bottle and I lay her in her crib without the paci, sometimes she stirs but she goes straight back to sleep, within the hour she will wake up and cry for the paci, I give it and we repeat that all night. If she gets too awake she starts rolling and grabbing my hand etc as I try to give it to her.
At nap time it's always been part of our routine, kind of a signal that it is nap time (she doesn't have the paci during the day) I really don't know how to get her to nap without it.
Most of the advice on line includes CIO. The No Cry sleep Solution says to wait until they are more or less asleep, wip the paci out and hold your finger on the side of her cheek. I tried this last night, the first time she wanted it I gave it, then waited, took it out and held my finger on her cheek. She went back to sleep. Over the next 10 mins she would start to make a face in her sleep like she was going to cry, I would press her cheek and she would go back to sleep. After being asleep for a while she started shocking herself awake (she does this a lot) but went back to sleep each time without the paci. She slept from 19.45 until 1.50, (normally she wakes for the first time around midnight) when she woke crying for the paci, I had to give it because there was no way the finger trick was going to work. It took about 20 mins of her spitting it out, grabbing it, chewing it, throwing it and me putting it back in and putting her on her side to get her back to sleep. She slept until 5.30 when I put her into bed with us (with the paci) and she slept until 7.00.
Does anyone have any tips on how best to do this? I know some babies really need to suck on something but I'm not sure I can stand the sleep deprivation any more. I have had a head ache from not getting enough solid sleep for about three weeks. How do I approach nap times and the night awakenings?
