How do I get health insurance for traveling overseas?

Hi all,

I am always very confused by health insurance. Because I have been an artist, free-lancer and on and off corporate worker I have had different kinds and currently, I am concerned I am about to travel overseas to the Dominican Republic and my insurance does not cover much for out of state.

Where can I get/buy health insurance for my trip of 6 days?

How much should this cost me?

Any input is really really appreciated!

P.S. I am from NYC and the local line is just swamped because of Sandy so no one is able to direct me on the phone from 311 because the signal is always busy.

Hello Terraka,

I don't know if this will be helpful at all, as it assumes that your insurance does not specifically exclude expenses incurred overseas.

I spent a year abroad (me and 3 children) and kept my own usual, high-deductible plan. I looked into their coverage, and they cover all customary charges, just like in the US. I did have to save receipts and submit those to the insurance company, but they applied it all toward my deductible.
