Moving to Kingwood, TX - Need Recommendations Please

Our family is moving from Portland, Oregon to Kingwood, TX. We've never been to the area, and we don't know anyone, so we're starting from scratch. My husband recently accepted a job at the Houston airport, and he's heard that Kingwood is a nice place, so we're looking to settle there.

We're looking for a family practice physician and/or a pediatrician, an MD, who will take our insurance, but is open-minded and okay with not vaccinating. We also need a physician for my husband and I.

We're also looking for a CSA or food co-op for fresh organic produce and whole foods.

We're currently looking for a house to rent in Kingwood. Are there neighborhoods that are especially nice?

Any recommendations on anything would be most appreciated. We have a 2 year old son, and I stay at home with him. We'd love to make friends.

Thank you.

Hi! I live in Kingwood and can tell you about a few resources.

Kingwood is a nice suburban community, if the suburbs are your thing. We're not suburbs people, so we're looking to move into Houston when we can. But if I had to pick a suburb over again, Kingwood is a good pick. In general, all the neighborhoods are very safe and nice. It really just depends on how much you are looking to spend. There are neighborhoods with homes in the millions and my "starter" home neighborhood in the low to mid 100's. I'm not sure about the rental market, but I see homes in my neighborhood for rent all the time. In my opinion, the best thing about Kingwood is the miles and miles of greenbelt trails!

For a vax-choice-friendly ped. I recommend Dr. Chin or Dr. Hassel at Texas Children's Pediatrics Kingwood. http://texaschildrenspediatrics.org/Kingwood/ I have a number of friends who use them.

Kingwood has a farmer's market every Thursday year-round, though I haven't seen much of a focus on organic produce there. Houston has Rawfully Organic http://www.rawfullyorganic.com/ a huge organic produce co-op. They have a local drop in Kingwood.

A group I have been involved with is called Smart Mommies. It is a breastfeeding/mom support group out of the Merry-Go-Round children's consignment store in Kingwood. There are lots of mamas in this group who are into attachment parenting, cloth diapering, etc. And as babies have grown into toddlers, there are lots of mamas with kids your son's age.

Thank you so much for responding. These resources are just what we're looking for. I especially appreciate the pediatrician recommendations, the produce co-op, and the "Smart Mommies" group info.

If you have a family practice physician recommend, that would be great. We'd love to find someone who is in our insurance plan, (an MD), but is open-minded to alternative treatments and spends time with patients.

A few days ago we drove through Kingwood and we really like the community. It's a change from Portland, but we like the walking trails, the neighborhood community pool, and that the area has such wonderful schools. (The website, greatschools.com gave many of the schools a 9 or a 10.) We've never lived in a suburb before, but I think we'll like Kingwood.

Thanks again. :)

I'm not aware of any family practice doctors in the area, whether open to alternative treatments or not. I haven't been to a doctor in years and just haven't had a need to look for one I like.

If you visit the Smart Mommies meetings, you can get on their Facebook group. People are always asking for local recommendations there. Here is the store that hosts the meetings. http://www.mylittlejuel.com/location.htm You might want to call for the current meeting schedule; the website may not be up to date.

Good luck, and I'm glad you like Kingwood so far! :-)
