Gestational Diabetes Testing

I had my GD test today :( It was gross. I'll have to wait until Monday for the results. I've never tested positive before, and Im not too worried about it. If I test positive, Ill have to take the three hour test, and if I test positive with that one, I will be risked out of my OB's practice and have to go back to my MFM, just in case any problems arise. So, Im finding myself a little more anxious about the results than usual.

Has anyone else had their test yet (if you are getting one?)

I have mine on Tuesday. Not looking forward to my "fruit punch"! Here's hoping for good results!

having mine on monday. not looking forward to it, but glad it will be over & done with. i do not like sugary things at all. blech

Just had mine on Monday and got the results on Tuesday--I passed. I also had to do one at about 10 weeks in the pregnancy--my doctor just runs it I think to compare. I was so dreading it, but now that I'm not having hideous MS anymore it was not nearly as bad. It still tasted gross, though, and I felt kind of lightheaded and then sugar-crashy after. I do not drink soda and don't have a lot of sugary stuff in general, so my body does not enjoy such a sugar rush!

Mine is on tuesday - i skipped it last pregnancy, but passed the 2 before that - my midwife wants me to do it this time.. I just went out today and bought a real sugar-caffeine free cola .. I gave up soda (completely) and most sugary things  just over a year ago - i'm a little nervous about it, both that i'll feel gross and that i'll have a relapse of my soda addiction, not really worried about passing..  but i didn't want to drink juice (the other choice my midwife gave) cause i know that sends me to the bathroom for hours after..   i'm trying to think of this as a treat.

i feel like absolute crap.

i had to drink the glucola this morning, and have my blood drawn, then have an ultrasound and then wait for the doctor. 5 hours without eating. it's been hours since i drank the stuff and had my blood drawn-9am and it's now after 4pm. i still feel awful. huge headache, all over grossness, and i cannot possibly ingest enough water.

how did you ladies feel after doing this test? is this normal? i don't eat sugary things- that was one of the most foul things i've ever ingested in all my life.

Kellybeth - I felt like that after my GD test with my 2nd pregnancy..  (with my 1st it wasn't so bad, don't think i waited as long or something)  - hope you feel better soon..

I had a stomach flu monday so i didn't do my glucose test tuesday as scheduled ..  i rescheduled for my next appt in 2 weeks.. yay. 2 more weeks to worry about how gross this will make me feel :P

My midwife sent me home with a glucometer yesterday. So sometime in the next two weeks I have to prick myself right after I wake up (assuming fast for 8 hrs) and about 2 hrs after a carby breakfast. SO much better than the icky sugar drink. I did that with my other two and it made me feel off all day.

I had my test on Tues. Honestly, it was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be! The glucola reminded me of the fruit punch drinks I had as a kid--which probably says a lot about my childhood nutrition, lol! I easily drank it within the 5 minutes, blood draw an hour later, and we went out for breakfast right afterwards. Easy peasy.

Failed the one hour test greensad.gif

Woke up at 9, at a 14 oz ribeye and drank about 40oz of water. Drank the drink at 11, got my blood drawn at 12. Sugar level was 168. I go in for the three hour test on Monday greensad.gif

I chose not to do one - my midwife gave me the low down at our last appointment (pros and cons) and basically left it up to me, but she didn't seem like she was a fan of the test for people at low risk.

I chose to skip it too.  I knew the discussion would likely come up at my last appointment so I read the SOGC Clinical Practice Guidelines ahead of time (http://www.sogc.org/guidelines/public/121E-CPG-November2002.pdf).  Midwife offered it and didn't seem biased either way, but was very supportive when I said I'd like to decline the test.  Pretty sure I'm known as that-client-who-researches-stuff by my midwifery team.  Sheepish.gif

Oh- here's to you mama!  that's not a good number.  but i do envy the morning ribeye!!!  can't remember the last time i had a steak.

keep us posted!

wasn't allowed to skip. required by hospital and my doctor is the head of the dept at the hospital, SOOO....

i was nervous because i am fat...BUT at the same time i have always been very healthy and such. i wanted to NOT have GD just so i could possibly make people re-examine stereotypes about weight & health. i had to do the 2 hour test w/ fasting beforehand. not only did i pass, i had amazing numbers. i didn't want to do it, but i know it was the right thing to do. i would have likely resisted if it wasn't an across-the-board type thing where everyone has to get it. if i'd been singled out due to my weight, i'd have pushed back.

Okay, my test has been scheduled for Monday morning at 8 am (eastern time). I have to fast from midnight on, so Im going to eat another steak and maybe some beans for late dinner on Sunday night and then drink a bunch of water at midnight. The idea of going from midnight- noonish the next day with no food or water is stressing me out. Twins do not make it easy to just not eat for that long- it's kind of painful.

So, Ill have the three hour test and hopefully I'll pass it.

good luck!

the fasting part is borderline cruel to do to a pregnant woman...especially not being allowed to drink water. that part was the absolute worst for me. i cheated and had a couple of sips when i first woke up the day of the test because i honestly feel like i would have had some sort of anxiety attack if i hadn't. only the equivalent of one or two swallows, but it made all the difference.

seriously no water ? they tell you how important water is, but oh, don't drink it :P sorry, i know that doesn't make it easier.. did they explain why not drinking water is important for the test? headscratch.gif

it's awful to not be able to drink water.

it dilutes the sugar levels, so i was told.

So sorry, Holly. That sucks. I feel like I would barely be able to make it that long and I am only growing one baby.

I had mine last Monday. Haven't heard if I passed or not, but assume they would let me know if I didn't, and I don't expect to have it. It's weird though, because they told me I didn't have to fast. My CNM just told me to focus on a protein-rich breakfast, so I had eggs and a little kefir. It was SO much more pleasant than the test with my son, where they told me to fast. I threw up all over a train platform after my GD test with my son....

I'm still curious though as to why I didn't have to fast this time.

That really sucks. Make sure you treat yourself with something delicious when it's done.

I had my glucose test a couple weeks ago and I really didn't mind it at all. The first half of the syrup actually tasted pretty okay to me, though the last half was a little harder to stomach (but still very bearable), and I passed it without any issue. I actually think I've started enjoying blood tests, as weird as that sounds. I like knowing things about me that I couldn't possibly figure out with having someone analyze my blood and it feels like I'm actually doing something proactive, where most of pregnancy is just sitting around and waiting.
