No.clue, but I've experienced the same quick stabbing pain here and there. Doesn't seem to be related to.anything, as far as I.can tell.

I get mild pain with every letdown until babe is a little older.

Other random pains could be nothing or could be something, just keep an eye on it.

my breasts seem to get more sensitive with each nursling.  First one I had no issues after the first few weeks of nipple pain.  Second one I had the mild letdown pain, couldn't wear certain bras and had to be real careful where my purse strap was or I'd be hurting the next day.  This one I've had a mild but plenty painful case of mastitis and I'm still getting random shooting pains from that, like on the side I usually burp her on and she often falls asleep on.

If it persists, try to find the cause.  I can't remember, had you already dealt with thrush?  I think someone did but can't remember who.

nope, no thrush. we've had an easy time of breast feeding, minus the first week of sore nipples getting adjusted. i had bought a new nursing tank that was pretty tight under the bust area and i slept in it. i'm wondering if that was making things painful/backed up. i broke some seams pulling on it and it fits much better now. :)

i will keep on eye out on it. i'm really engorged on that side today which is different than normal. wondering if it was a plugged duct.

DANGIT!  BFing going really reasonably well again for several days, and now I THINK I have mastitis, or at least a very plugged duct (or two?)  Anyone want to weigh in while I wait for a call back from my midwife?

About 30-40% of my very large left breast is swollen, VERY hard and VERY sore, warm, pink, etc.  I am nursing with her opposite the blockage (although I read on Kellymom that may not matter), applying heat, massaging, taking ibuprofen, etc.  I don't seem to have any systemic issues, like fever (yet?), but it seems like more than a plugged duct?

Ugh, I feel your pain, Buko. I had a very similar experience a couple of weeks ago, plus the fever, though my temps didn't reach mastitis level. I worked on it a lot (leaning forward in a hot bath, massaging and expressing from the most painful spots til nothing came out (and crying, 'cause it hurt so bad) was the most effective approach) and it went away in about 36 hours. Do what you can, but try not to stress too much or lose sleep over it - apparently, that can make it worse! :/

No suggestions, just wishing you a healthy breast soon, Buko. hug2.gif

Do what you're already doing, plus get rest.  Rest!

You can take lecithin which help with plugged ducts.

But what totally helped me... a vibrator.  Seriously.  I have a small bullet one and after a warm compress, got baby latched on and rolled the vibrator (on low speed) from the widest part of the breast toward the nipple right along the hard areas while she's nursing.  It kinda hurts, so don't press too hard or make it hurt too much.  But it totally worked to break it up and move things along.  By the next day it still felt bruised but was soft again.  If  you don't have a vibrator use an electric toothbrush or something like that.

I had a couple plugged ducts last night too. Took a super hot shower and massaged the crap out of them and then I fed her right after and did compressions on the sore areas. Seem to help! Still a little tender today but much better.

Anyone else have vasospasms? I think I finally figured out the source of my mysterious nipple pain. Saw them turn white with my own eyes today.

WHAT. I've never heard of that!

I've been feeling like DD isn't eating as much. She was really sleepy today, after a night of minimal feeding, and barely woke for extended sessions today. She'd wake, nurse a little, sleep; wake ten minutes later, repeat, then fall asleep for good. She did have a couple of good alert times, but they weren't as long as usual. 5.5 wks. Maybe this is a rest period before the 6wk growth spurt? Should I be worried? I have an appt with the midwives tomorrow, so I'll bring it up, but maybe one of you have experienced similar behavior?...

Also, I haven't started pumping yet because I wanted to establish a really solid BFing routine (ha) - and we're going to CA from Thurs - Tues. I wanted to start pumping (in earnest!) when we return (along with EC), since it seemed like such a hassle to start during the trip. DD will be almost 7 weeks. Will I have missed the boat? Will I still be able to pump (& increase production)? Will she still learn to take a bottle that late?

a vibrator totally helped the area the other day! no issues since.

i had no idea that's what it's called/there's a name for it. it just happens to me when the nips get cold. so uncomfortable!

Sgsnyder I bet it's normal and you just have some sleepless nights to look forward to lol. But definitely check with your midwife and get her weighed just to be sure.

Yes it has a name and they hurt like hell. Mine do it even when I'm not cold just from fabric rubbing on them when I walk around or even sleeping sometimes. It's not constant but sometimes it feels like it. greensad.gif hoping warmer weather will help if we ever get spring here!!

Ugh, so I'd gone dairy free for a week or two (as well as avoiding legumes+brassica family, chocolate, caffeine, and peanuts). My DH and family bought into the idea that what you eat doesn't affect baby's digestion and so everyone thought I was crazy for restricting myself. DD's demeanor became much more pleasant/comfortable throughout the week, but DH convinced me it was probably due to her getting older, not me abstaining from dairy. On Saturday night I had a salad with goat cheese and a chocolate containing some dairy (chocolate was ruled out as a cause of fussiness by that point). Then yesterday I had a ham sandwich with cheese and butter, as well as buttered potatoes. DD has returned to an intense level of fussiness so I'm thinking it's most likely the dairy. I'm just so mad at myself for not holding to my mama intuition and for believing DH & MIL over my own gut feeling. Glad I didn't let DH persuade me to go out for milkshakes, though.
Poor DD is just so uncomfortable. And you know what? Poor me! We're in for a long fussy week and I'm on week 6 of not having slept more than 1 hour at a time. I'm feeling fat, lonely, and tired. Plus my supply is going crazy. One day DD eats all day long and the next she spaces feedings out a few hours at a time. My boobs have no idea what to do so I'm enforced and terrified of getting mastitis again.

Sorry for the rant! I don't have any mom friends to confide in.

Sorry www- sleeplessness can cause a whole different level of sadness. Have you found a local group to meet up with? Lll is a good place to start.

All of my kids have had food sensitivities as infants. I always test foods a few tines to make sure....now you know and hopefully dh will support you now.

also see if you have a local chapter of mom's club. http://www.momsclub.org/links.html

it's really helpful having local moms around. i don't have anyone to confide in either, but have met some moms through LLL and they encourage me to join mci. i will as soon as naomi gets a little bigger. they have park and mall walks and lots of other activities.

Thanks, Chloesmom and Kellybeth. I've looked into the MOMS group and there is one super close to me, but I'm weighing whether or not to join bc there's an annual fee and DH and I are moving in June.

Question for everyone: does anyone else's LO nurse more frequently than every 2 hours? DD nurses every 1 hour sometimes and my MIL and mom are convinced it's not "normal". There's a lot of comfort nursing going on I'm sure, and I'm fine with it. Actually love the bonding with LO and her sweet milky smiles. She wants/needs her mama!

It does make it difficult to go out though, as well as encroaching on sleep...
www- that is normal, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If your baby is content nursing, then that's just the way she is. Every baby is different!
Also, the moms club will send you their local public calendar for 3 months via email before you join/pay annual dues. That's what i did first. I wanted to meet the mamas first and ser how it felt first.
Kellybeth, thank you! That's what I was feeling- this is just her need and I'm meeting it. I hate the implication that something is "wrong" with me or my baby just because she likes to nurse a lot. I'm trying my best not to let others' opinions get to me and to just do what feels right for Margot.

I'll have to get that MOM info and see if it'll be worth the try. I'm lucky enough to be going home to visit family/friends for three weeks in May, so depending on their schedule it might or might not be worth it.

Clarissa nurses a lot in the evening - sometimes every hour or more. Cluster feeding I think it's called. But a lot of it is for comfort too as she is really upset in the evenings. So it is normal! She could be going thru a growth spurt too if it seems to happen all day.
