New Traditions & playdate adventures-- Seattle Eastside

Hi all,

I'm wondering if any of you crunchy/homeschooling/progressive folks out there would be interested in a little seasonal meet-up~

1) because really, can you ever have too much tribe? I LOVE meeting kindred spirits and so do my kids.

2) Tis' the season to celebrate, and if a little fun learning can be squeezed into that, so much the better!

What I have in mind is a sort of magic carpet ride around the world, visiting different cultures and experiencing their midwinter holiday celebrations. Before I was a homeschooling Mama I did this with my  elementary students and it was a blast!

It was such a wonderful way to learn about the common ground we share with others around the world, celebrating the return of the light.

In a nutshell:

3 or more parents volunteer to facilitate a SIMPLE holiday "station" and kids cycle through (though with a small group of kids it could be done all together). Each stop on the "journey" gives kids a taste of the culture & holiday traditions-- through a story, a snack, a craft project, a brief intro, a ritual like tying a wish on the yule log, any of the above that the parent in charge wants to include.

Also, hopefully some time afterward for kids to just hang out & parents to talk over hot chocolate or tea.

I am a "secular-but-spiritual" homeschooler who has two daughters, almost five and seven and a half, and we are currently fascinated with learning about the world's peoples-- with as much dramatic adventure, storytelling and magic as possible, thank  you!-- and we'd love to meet up with like minded families.

Who's up for a little Midwinter magic?

Either respond in the forum or via private message~ we'll need to set the date soon in this busy season!

Good morning~

Where are you located on the Eastside? We are in Woodinvile/Redmond area, and would love to do something like this! We Homeschool our 2 girls 9 and 6. Sorry the response is brief (busy with holiday preparations), but I saw this and wanted to reply this morning. Feel free to contact me either way as well.

Ikoz2,

looking forward to meeting up!

We are near Duvall, and regularly travel to Redmond/Woodinville/Carnation/etc.

And anyone else in this general area interested in holiday fun, get in touch and we'll make a plan.

We're excited to meet you all!

Hi! It seems that I live in between you two (just a few miles south/west from the Duvall valley). Late to the party, but love the idea and would be interested to participating in the future. Also interested in regular meet ups.

We would enjoy getting together towards the end of February. Maybe we could get together and meet each other and talk about doing a spring equinox gathering?

I have renamed this thread to reflect the evolving conversation~

no longer focused on the single multicultural holiday event, but brainstorming further ideas for creative & meaningful gatherings with kindred spirits.

I like the idea of creating our own new traditions (though I love many of the old ones, too!), whether it's to celebrate seasonal shifts, universal human connections, common dreams, childhood imagination, food, music, storytelling....

It's empowering and inspiring to pool our hearts and minds and see what cool ideas we come up with together.

It reminds me that we really are agents of our own lives. And I need to be reminded of that more often!

We make magic when we step outside the prescribed guidelines and create something new.

And the hidden prize of all this of course, is the community we build with each other.

If any of this strikes a chord, share your thoughts.

What ideas are currently spinning in your head?

Let's play!

Ikoz2, I love the idea of a Spring equinox event.

I'm already dreaming up possibilities...

Anyone else interested in meeting up to brainstorm on that, and meet new folks, send a pm.

Looking forward to the fun.
