I'm losing my hair!

Thread Starter

DS is 4-months-old.  For the past 6 weeks or so I have been losing strands and strands of hair.  Not in chunks, so I don't have any bald spots or anything, but every time I run my fingers through my hair I lose strands and strands of hair.  And when I take a shower it is crazy!!!  It seems like hundreds of strands come out with each wash / rinse.

I'm still on vitamins.  Anyone have any ideas?

Hair loss after pregnancy is really common and normal.  During pregnancy, the hormonal cocktail (can't remember which one is particularly responsible... progesterone, maybe) causes hair loss to slow.  That's why many women have much thicker hair during pregnancy -- you're not growing more, just less is falling out.  After birth, those hormones shift and cause the hair you didn't lose before to fall out.  Many women lose up to a third of their hair volume around three to four month PP.  Many of my friends have gotten the requisite "mom's haircut" to hide some of this loss and reduce the scraggliness.  It's a totally normal process though.  Another frustrating part is keeping it out of the drains.  eyesroll.gif

Yep, sounds normal.  I had the same experience, only it lasted for like a year...uggh.

It comes back, and then you get to spend your morning trying to slick all those little baby hairs down.  Cuss.gif

(Don't stress out, it really will come back!)

I am right there with you.  Avoiding the "mom haircut," though.  I just throw it up in some 'do so it's not noticeable.  whistling.gif

My advice, get some headbands!  A friend of mine lived in Lululemon headbands until the hairs grew back to a length where they weren't sticking up all over the place.  Hang in there, it happens to A LOT of mamas, but it does grow back!

Yep. This is me right now and DD just turned 1. It comes back, don't worry!

It's disturbing to have your hair fall out, but does come back!  DD is 11 months, and I have so much new hair growing, I look like I have bangs.

It happened to me right around the same time (my son is 4mo, and it started about 4 weeks ago).  I had been expecting it to happen right after I gave birth, so it took me by surprise.  By the end of the day, the back of my shirt is covered with hair that stuck to it, and yep, the shower is a mess.  Yikes.  Luckily I have thick, curly hair so I don't think it looks any different.  But it's pretty annoying to pull out of the drain!

I spent the past six months with my long hair in an ever-thinning ponytail because of how scraggly it was getting.  Then I just chopped it off at shoulder level and now (almost 12 months PP) the loss is finally slowing down.  Fun stuff... Especially in the shower... *sigh*

I am now 12 months pp and dealing with short bang-like new growth over my whole head. Boo-urns.

Ditto!

This is my third baby and I hadn't experience pp hair loss with any of the others, so I was worried when I started to find piles of my hair all over the house! It's still falling out, but it's growing back. My hair looks terrible right now.

lol I posted an identical thread when my son was 4 mo two months ago! :) now he is 6+ mos and my hair loss totally slowed down... Now I have super awesome fuzz growing in all around my hairline... My hair loss was bad at the time- like chunks coming out in the shower! But now its back to normal and filling back in- good luck mama!

Yeah, it sucks but is totally normal! It will grow back and then you get all those fun little hairs smile.gif

Isn't it great? I don't know whose hair is thinner, mine or my baby's.

The best part is how it coincides with when little hands start to get grabby...
