Best learning Apps

Dp and I have gotten our girls tablets for Christmas. (lucky kids!) I am wanting to pre-load it with educational stuff but don't know where to start!

DD1 is 8. She reads very well and is loving the American Girls series. Some things I would like to work on with her are correctly writing a paragraph, math (shes learning multiplication), and grammar.

DD2 is 5. She has a late birthday so if she were in traditional school she would be in prek. She knows almost all her letters, upper and lower, can count, and do some basic addition. She has an interest in reading and we have started the letter sounds, but haven't gotten too far in that. I currently only know of star fall that helps with that.

Can anyone suggest skill appropriate apps that you love? Why do you like them?

iPad or android tablets? That will change what apps are available.

Bump? Any suggestions for EITHER. We have an iPad and a kindle fire in our home. My son is 2 and loves them. We let him play for about 20-30mins a day. His faves right now are Monkey Preschool Lunchbox, Peekaboo Forest, Starfall ABCs, and the first BOB book. He also loves book apps. like the little critter books, and the Sandra Boyton Books.

Any other suggestions welcome.

My 5yo ds likes the Bob Books app for the ipad.

Ds is 5 we have iPhones and a nook color which I have rooted to allow downloads of regular android apps.

Ds enjoys Teachme kindergarten and Teachme 1st grade
Word Wagon by duck duck moose
Eggy words (made by the reading eggs people)
Create pottery
Angry birds (we could pretend it was about physics!)

I find ds is in an awkward phase for games/apps. He can do extensive math but doesn't read independently so if the app doesn't read to him he can't do it alone. Also he has master most of the 'learning to read' apps I've found. They are mostly phonics and letter identification

For the ipad my kids enjoy(ed):

  1. The TeachMe sereis.
  2. The Reading Rainbow app (we subscribe)
  3. Monster Physics
  4. Smarty Pants
  5. Bugs and Buttons (they are too old for this)
  6. All the Toca Boca apps (they loved these a while back but might have aged out of them)
  7. Pettson's Inventions (Also on andriod devices)
  8. Grow Your Garden
  9. Playtales (also on Andriod)
  10. Starfall letters

And many more but I forget ...

I used to go to the Iheartthisapp.com website for free and/or discounted apps.  Also Mom's with Apps gives free or discounted apps on Fridays.

OP, a lot of these apps maybe available for your andrioid devices.  You just have to check.  That market is growing in leaps and bounds.  Loads of free playtales books right now for example, I just downloaded some onto my android phone.  Your littlest may enjoy them.
