is note taking part of the homework?

dd is in 5th grade. 

part of her homework is note taking from her text books.

i am wondering if this is the norm at some point of time at school.

at first i thought it was text book issue, but then they are allowed to bring their textbooks home. perhaps its a learning tool.

Is it a problem for her? I wouldn't say this is the norm where my kids go to school (4th and 7th grades), at least not in all of their classes. DD1 is expected to take notes on material in language arts and studies that for the tests. Perhaps this reflects a bias in the way the teacher himself/herself learns? In the community college class I am taking currently, even though we get a PPT handout of the lecture, I can't really internalize the material until I rewrite it in note form for myself. For others it's enough to just hear it or read it.

no it isnt a problem for her. 

she has to do this for her social studies and science class. 

i think it really does help her learn better. in the sense that she notices the little things which she usually glosses over otherwise. 

was just curious to see if other schools did this. i know for her hw buddy in 8th grade this is part of their hw. 

because i have not seen dd study ever till note taking.

My DD is also in 5th grade and they have started note taking homework in preparation for tests. I think it is wonderful to be introducing it as a strategy so early on, and will serve them well in the long run. Looking back, I don't think I learned how to take proper notes until college!

My oldest is in 6th grade. She has been getting study guides in class that she has to fill out and studies from that for her tests. I do think it helps her retain the information when she writes it down. I know that note taking was a really important skill for me to learn as a student.
