Broken needle

So I got my first sewing machine and I looked up videos on how to thread it and (eventually) got that done but then I started sewing and the tip of my needle broke right off! Why would it break? I was only sewing a thin pair of shorts =\

If I pull the fabric through the machine instead of letting the feed dogs do their job I break a lot of needles
