We're dealing with this, too.  Our 2 boys have names that start with "R".  Total coincidence, but now we feel we have to steer FAR away from "R" names for this 3rd boy because we don't want a theme.  But for whatever reason I seem drawn still to R names.  I do know a family that started using "J" names for their boys, 7 boys later they really regretted using that theme because they had a REALLY hard time agreeing on that last baby's name.  I think themes are fun, we're just going for a "family name" theme. :)

skycheattraffic, I think Kassie and Callie are super cute sister names and not too matchy or theme-y.  :)

Thanks, Harmie!
Btw if you're drawn to a third "R" name, I'd just go with it. Then if you have more kids and aren't feeling it, simply choose something else. If anyone asks, the first three were a coincidence wink1.gif

We are just now starting to talk names.   There hasn't even been time to think about it before.  My oldest ds is Adrien Michael, middle dd is Angelina Elise, and my youngest ds is Elijah Gray (Eli unless he's in trouble).  With the twins, we want something nature oriented, but we are having a super hard time coming up with anything.  I really like Rowan and Willow, but dh is not sold.  So we'll keep plugging away until something strikes our fancy.

I absolutely love the name Adrien for a boy, thought I would spell it with an A instead of an E, because we have an awesome friend with that spelling.

However, it will never happen. DH is set on naming a boy Julian after his Gpa if this baby is a boy. and even in the highly unlikely event that I have another after this one and that it was also a boy, I wouldnt have an Julian and an Adrian. Too similar.

DS is Lewis which I suppose could be shortened to lew but we don't. Personally I have noticed that most people go by what the parents do. I have a friend with an Elijah that would never get called Eli. So unless the child chooses to introduce him/herself as a shortened name, most people will go by what the parents or child go by.
We are still undecided on this little guys name. DH and I have a hard time agreeing. He never likes any names I suggest. But I usually get the middle name. This one will have the middle name Lawrence.

I agree, I know some full grown Michaels and some Stephens that are never shortened because their parents never shortened them and they didn't either.

My family is full of non shortened names. All three sisters had no nick name, and my youngest sister and I have 4 syllable names. My DH is a Stephen and he bristles if you call him Steve. My daughter is Penelope and I made it very clear in the early days Penny was not an option. Now no one calls her anything buy Penelope.

That's so interesting to read different takes on shortened names. DH and I for instance rejected a front runner for a girl because it didnt lend itself to a nickname well.

I think its definitely possible to use the full name even if it can be shortened, but you just can't predict and I want to like both versions.  For example, my brother is Daniel.  My mother always introduced him as that but as he got older, his friends called him Dan or Danny.  He may not have corrected them, because it didn't bother him but I really to don't like it at all. On the other hand, I really like the name Andrew and Drew as well for short, but definitely not Tony for Anthony so I'd probably really be irritated if people called my child that.  I guess I can't control everything but if we could find a name  that is what it is without a nickname, probably would be a lot easier.

I'm always drawn to names that cannot be shortened or nicknamed. My name is Sarah, so I was always just called Sarah. And my DD is Iris, which can't really be abbreviated either. This baby, however, will be named August, and we have been calling him Gus. And I'm falling in love with that name as well. :-)

Iris and August! How sweet, great choices:)

Neither DH nor I have names that can readily be shortened (though some try), so finding one with an acceptable nickname was important for our first. But he was always Gabriel to us. We have had friends insist on shortening it his whole life, but only in the last couple of years as his brothers have done it has he really accepted it. Now I'll call him Gabe here and there, too, but he only introduces himself as Gabriel.

Next came Iain whose name really can't be shortened. I sometimes call him "E" and he asks why because there's no E in his name. Logical kid. orngtongue.gif Judah is almost never shortened, and Eliana is most often Ellie but answers to all variations of her first and middle names, plus nicknames! lol.gif

Now I'm debating baby names and definitely considering possible nicknames and variations. Thankfully some name sites have suggestions and feedback from actual owners of those names.

I'm on the opposite side of wanting a name that can be shortened. I don't like when people shorten names....unless the person does it themselves. I'm just weird like that lol However, my DP doesn't feel that way and pointed out that our DD's name could be shortened easily...luckily I really like the short version. Her name is ****** and could be shortened to *** I guess.

I think the girl's name we've chosen could be shortened but not the boy's.

It's funny how I really don't think i want a name that can be shortened, but then the name I picked for a girl is Elise and could definitely be shortened to Ellie or Elle at some point in time.  Maybe its really about what the nickname could potentially be, less so that it can/can not be shortened.  Still wrestling with boys names, Theo remains my top choice but DH is not a fan because his father is theodore and there is some negative history there that he cant move past.  So I am  now leaning towards Jason, which of course could be shortened to Jay.  But I'm okay with that (I think).  I really love Jason Matthew (DH's middle name) but he's against using matthew I think all together at this point. I have brought it up alot without much change in his opinion.  Searching and searching for a middle for Jason that makes me love it...

I guess I am a loner out here, but I love names that can have many variations, especially if they're ones I like. We have never called our DS anything but Andrew, but I love Andy and Drew and want him to decide what he goes by.

Alexandra has made a sudden move to the top of our list and although I really love it, I am worried that it's just so much name! My DH says we will call her Alex from the start, but I'm not sold just yet. I had wanted a flower middle name, but the only one syllable one I like is Rose, and that's my middle name. Anything more than one with Alexandra seems overwhelming. Hmmm, maybe I'll get to use my beloved name of Ruth after all! smile.gif

You're not alone! We picked Kassandra for DD because of all the choice: Kassie, Sandra, Sandy. She has the middle name Diane and we have a 2 syllable last name but we think it flows nicely. We're still working on a girl name here but love names with choices!

ETA She's been Kassie from day one and only gets Kassandra when she's in trouble wink1.gif

The multiple options is one reason I love Eliana's name: Elle, Ellie, Lia, Liana, Ana... DH argued it had too many syllables and too many vowels lol.gif but those all lend to options!

Friends have an Elise and I was surprised that they call her Ellie, too. I never thought of Elise as being long enough to shorten!
