potty training/learning question

Hey Mamas,
we are on day 2 of the 3 day potty training (book by Kleint). It's going as expected, and we have 17 pairs of underwear about about 10 pairs of sweat pants, so only doing laundry twice a day =P

My question is, what are we supposed to do at night? Last night we put him in his underwear, then added a bamboo insert over it and a cover from his fitted diaper stash (we were cloth diapering). Good idea? Bad idea?

Actually, more questions. He doesn't really seem to care when he's wet. Is that normal? And he'll be dry for hours then pee in his pants, sit on the potty and pee just a tiny bit, then pee a lot again 10 minutes later. The book suggested going hourly, but that's just not cutting it. We tried for every half hour but he's still peeing in his pants more than the potty (in both quantity and # of times). I'm not worried about the laundry/mess so much as I am about doing something wrong or him not learning.

Oh, he's 2 years and almost 4 months. He seems to understand what's going on.

Please help!

We had a development today. I went home for lunch (I'm at work) to give his dad a break. When I got there he told me Aden had peed about 5 times in the last hour.

Before it was time for me to leave again we took him up to the potty. He kept saying "I'm done" but I knew he had to go because he hadn't peed in awhile and also he hadn't had a bowel movement since yesterday morning, but he usually goes twice a day, so he was way behind. I kept telling him to stay there and distracting him and he seemed to be getting upset, maybe desperate. Suddenly he had a bm. I'm pretty sure he knew it was coming and didn't want to go on the potty for some reason, though he had done so yesterday morning. We made a big deal/celebration of it yesterday, and even more so this time. When he understood we were celebrating "aden went poo poo in the potty" then he started jumping up and down and laughing.

adorkable- I just got that pdf ebook whatever you recommended and it is really good! My guy is- 2 and a 1/2 and I have been too asual about it- I didn't realize I should have the first day with ds naked and then stop all diapers cold turnkey (except at night). I like  a lot of what she has to say and I will try it- I am ready to train him! I feel  a little guilty for waiting this long!

I didn't use any of those books, but I did it cold turkey too at 22 months with both my girls.

DD1 was able to have undies on, but DD2 we had to have a bout 2 weeks of no undies and just have her run around without anything on. It seemed to help with sensations of having to go to the bathroom.  When she was wearing her undies, she always peed, I think it just felt too much like having a diaper on.

Just what worked for us.  Good luck.

neonalee, if you want to the site now has a mobile version in beta, its pretty good so far i have been testing it rather than use tapatalk like i usually do.  go to the bottom of the page and pick [ mobile] rather than [desktop].  in the future after the beta test is over, it will choose the right one for you usually but can always be changed there.

Thanks for that Adorkable! I'll check it out. I don't know why Tapatalk is so bad on Mothering and so good on all the other places I go, but it is. I did check out the site you recommended on my phone and it looked really good. I may go back again and check out other blog posts, but .....

As for potty training, we are done!! I'm sure there will be accidents of course, but yesterday at "school" he did not have a single accident. And that night he told me when he needed to poop in the potty! I'm so excited! We weren't 100% good on the 3rd day and poop was still a problem on the 4th day. Yesterday/Monday was the 5th day. We mostly followed the book. Went straight to underwear on Thursday and did lots of laundry. For nights we leave him in underwear, then add one of our bamboo inserts (baby kicks) on top and 1 of 2 cute diaper covers. We've been adamant about them not being diapers. We call them his "monkey pants" and "dinosaur pants" for night-time. He doesn't really want to wear them though, so I think we'll cut those out soon. I'll just need more sheets (we only have 2 since we were co-sleeping up until now). I'm so lucky to have a little guy that transitions so easily!

I have been finding that my little guy is MUCH more likely to go to the toilet on his own (he's 32 months) when he's naked as opposed to wearing underwear and pants.  I think it may be in part because he's more aware of his body and some because it's easier for him to just hop up onto the toilet if he's already undressed.  If he is wearing underwear and pants it's usually me that takes him to the toilet (usually without objection) or he'll just go in his pants.

So just a suggestion to those in the early training process - somtimes naked at home (for as long as it takes) is the way to go!!
