Vitex Elixir and pregnancy

Hi Jennifer!  I am wondering if you can tell me if Vitex Elixir (by Gaia) is generally safe during pregnancy? http://www.gaiaherbs.com/products/detail/396/Vitex-Elixir-  I have read about people taking vitex to help with trying to conceive, but this particular elixir contains other herbs. This helps with severe pms symptoms and regulating menstruation, but is it the same as a vitex capsules or tincture?  Do women take those throughout pregnancy, or only while trying to conceive?

Vitex is often given to women who are trying to conceive, and throughout the first trimester, to help maintain progesterone levels until the placenta takes over this function.  However, the formula that you are inquiring about has other herbs in it as well.  Several of the  other herbs are contraindicated in pregnancy, therefore this formula is not appropriate for preconception work, and should not be taken during pregnancy. 

I would suggest working with a midwife or licensed naturopathic physician to get more information about the appropriate herbs and doses to take while trying to conceive and in the first trimester.
