Where to buy wild oysters??

I cant seem to find a site to buy wild caught oysters from that has a decent price.  Anyone?  Vital Choice doesnt even sell them!  Also would like to try salmon roe, but Vital Choice is too expensive.  I requested that Azure Standard carry both.  Anyone want to suggest it to them as well?

Thanks!

Anyone?

I like smoked oysters too, but even they are getting hard to find (and if I do they're mainly packed in cottonseed oil, blech).

I can't help you - I guess I am very lucky to have the best oysters in the world growing just a few miles down the road! They generally go for about a dollar each here at the fish market, but if you have shellfisherman friends, you can get them for .50 or .75 cents each. Do they have particular health benefits other than being delicious?

What area are you in? I think it depends on where you live. Here in the Puget Sound area of Washingon I can get oysters at the farmers market, the marina, from the seafood market, grocery stores, and directly from certain growers. When I lived in the San Diego area they were much less easy to come by, but I could still get them in sea food markets and upscale grocery stores with large seafood departments.

Also, you may want to consider looking for farmed oysters instead of wild. I know most of us are used to equating "wild" with good and "farmed" with bad as far as seafood goes. With oysters this does not apply. In fact, the Seafood Watch rates farmed oysters as "green" and wild as "yellow" in their ratings. Almost all oysters sold are farmed. When harvesting wild oysters on a commercial scale they have to dredge the sea floor which causes its own set of issues. Farmed oysters are raised in on floats and the like, causing no damage to the environment when harvested. Oysters eat what is in the water, so their food does not cause pollutants. There are no questionable oyster feeds, GMO, etc.

I have hand harvested wild oysters on islands near my home, but I mainly get farmed. The farms here are sustainable, clean, and protect the shoreline form commercial development!

Good to know!  After a little research I came up with pretty much the same conclusion.  I won't buy farmed fish bc they feed them crap, but since feed is not given to the oysters then thats ok, that's my main concern.

Oysters are the best source of zinc out there!!

I have read that farmed oysters are lower in nutrients than wild caught however, but I would not want to support destruction of the ocean floor.  That would be awesome to hand harvest them youself tho!!!  I am no where near an ocean, there is NO fresh seafood here.  Wish there was!!
