Thimerosal:Thimerosal is a mercury-based preservative

used in the manufacturing process of multidose vaccines.

According to immunizeinfo.org thimerosal is a compound that is 49.6% mercury by weight.

Adjuvant: pharmacological agent added to a drug to increase or aid its effect

Antigen: A substance that when introduced into the body stimulates the production of an antibody

Antibody

Acting as the body's army, antibodies are proteins generally found in the blood that detect and destroy invaders, like bacteria and viruses

Thimerosol/Mercury are the same thing

ps: i know it's not an abbreviation or acronym, but some moms may not know two words of the same meaning may be used when referencing ingredients

Well not really.

According to the public health agency of Canada, thimerosal is:

"Thimerosal is a mercury-based preservative used in the manufacturing process of multidose vaccines."

According to immunizeinfo.org thimerosal is a compound that is 49.6% mercury by weight.  I have no idea what the rest of thimerosal is made up of.

Yeah, it's a mercury compound, but it's not the same as mercury. And the mercury that's in it is ethyl mercury not methyl mercury. But the two terms are used interchangeably around here, so I see where she's coming from.

Thimerosol is a mercury compound chemical. Not the same as mercury (which in its metallic or elemental form is very poisoness) , although continuing mercury in a compound chemical.

Some every day analogies are table salt, or water. These are compound chemicals. Water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen in compound (both of which are highly explosive in elemental form). Table salt is made up of chlorine and sodium in compound. Both poisoness to people.

How about adding "adjuvant" to the lis of definitions. This is a chemical added to a vaccine to enhance immune system response and allow for less of the toxic antigen to be included for the vaccine to work effectively.

sure - the Op was on abbreviations, but I think defintions of commonly used words are good as well.  I am going to add thimerosal, adjuvant, and antigen.

If anyone thinks my definitions are off, let me know and I will happily edit or discuss.
