Old Wives Tales about Gender Guesses - True for you? « Back to Group Discussions

So this is more for fun than anything else, but I'm just curious about peoples past experiences and how things turn out as we find out the gender on our little ones....Are the "Old Wives Tales" usually right or wrong for you? Which tests did you use?

For my first, the chinese gender prediction was wrong - it said girl, and I had a boy.

I also took a few of those online questionaires, and sometimes it said boy and sometimes girl...this was because my symptoms were all over the map. (Things they use - craving salty vs sweet, the way you carry, tendency for DP to gain sympathy weight (mine did last time, but hasn't this time), etc).

I carried DS just like they describe those pregnant with boys (like a basketball, couldn't tell that I was pregnant from the back, etc), but I haven't started really showing yet with this one.

I've also heard about the ones hanging a ring over your belly and seeing if it rotates in a circle or swings back and forth (i forget which direction indicates which sex).

There is the pee test you can buy at the store, and I have heard that is pretty accurate if you are having a boy, but you may still have a boy if it reads girl.

I have also heard that kids are intuitive and will act particularly affectionate toward Mom if the LO is opposite sex, and standoff ish if LO is same sex as the child. (This pregnancy little boys have been very friendly, while little girls not so much...I didn't notice last time)

Is there any others? How have they worked for you? What about intuition or family members "just knowing"? Most of my family says girl for me this time...but I think that's the normal guess when you have a boy first. 

With my son, my immediate thought was that he was a boy, but as time progressed I thought that he might be a girl.  With this one, it's been the opposite - I was absolutely positive that I was having a girl early on, and now I think "boy". 

According to the Shettles...Shettler? Theory about timing of conception, I should have a good chance at a girl this time...I'm not sure about conception last time, so I don't know if it rings true for me or not.

We have no other kids so I have no intuition or behavior in that department to judge.  But based on timing of conception I think this will be a girl.  We had sex at O-2 and O-5.  There may have still been some male swimmers in there, but I'm leaning toward girl.

My mother-in-law had 2 boys and her elder son has 2 boys.  It would be nice if she could have a granddaughter.  My parents already have 6 grandkids - 3 boys and 3 girls.  So no matter what we have w will upset the balance.

My EDC was off by a week (original EDC was 6/27/13 and ultrasound EDC is 6/20/13) so I was off with my memory of my LMP (embarrasing- I know!) so I have no clue when I ovulated (we weren't really 'trying'),  so I guess we'll have to wait for the gender ultrasound around 20 weeks.  I have my NT ultrasound this Thursday so I'm hoping that maybe we could be able to tell early- but we're not counting on it.  I took an online prediction quiz and it said girl.  The chinese test said boy.  Who knows!  lol

Oh, I had absolutely no idea about conception with my first, lol! When I called to get an appointment and they asked my LMP, I had absolutely no clue.  I guess it's no wonder we got pregnant!!

Well, in terms of the tests...they all claim about a 50% success rate! Lol...it's fun wondering though.

We suspect this baby is a girl because I've had more morning sickness this time.
My mom also reads tarot cards as a hobby and enjoys predicting the gender of babies in the family. She was right for my sons and for my cousins' and some coworkers of hers. She is predicting a girl.
We think this pregnancy is the result of sex on cd8 and we suspect I might have ovulated on cd12 so that also leans toward girl.

Nice...I wonder if your MIL will get a granddaughter then...or maybe they only produce boys, ha ha!

My son is my parent's first grandchild, and my MIL's 7th...MIL also has 5 great grandchildren...random fact about DH and I...DH is 15 years younger than his sister, who has 3 kids (who are around my age), and they each have kids.  (DH also has a brother a similar age to him with kids).  I am 16 years older than my youngest brother...there are nearly 40 years difference between our siblings.  Explaining to the kids who are aunts and uncles and who are cousins is really confusing.  anyhoo....

hmmm, that's cool! there are definitely some people who are "on" in terms of predictions.  i want to find someone like that to ask, lol!

...although I'm afraid to lean to far one way or the other for fear of being disappointed if I am wrong...I'm kind of glad that I have a mixed bag of suspicions.

For all of mine, around 12 weeks if the heart rate was OVER 160 I had a girl and under 155 I had a boy.  I've carried 7 babies to 18w and this proved true for each one of them.  We'll see what happens this time.

Oh fun, I forgot about that one! It was true for my SIL too...but not for me.  For DS, his heart rate was 165.  It was one of the reasons why I went from thinking "boy" to "girl"! This baby has a HR around 150, so we will see if this is an opposite truth for me

I am not that familiar with gender guessing techniques but for this baby, I've had a lot of unusual experiences ... namely I had two people identify themselves as psychics and tell me I was going to be pregnant by winter and have a boy. This was last February so we shall see. Also, my friend's son (3 years old) approached me in August and randomly said "You're going to have a baby in your tummy soon and it's going to be a boy". We concieved the next cycle (and weren't really trying) so that was neat. I also had a crazy dream in the spring time of a witch doctor telling me that I would have a child soon and it would be a crazy wild child boy.

I play with tarot too but I find I'm only accurate when I'm doing readings for things that I'm not emotionally attached to (I just can't figure out if it's really my reading or my desires affecting my interpretation, though I was accurate about when I would get pregnant when I read them last year)

I've had a couple people guess girl but for no real reason other than... well I'm not sure. My FIL is convinced it is going to be a boy because there are NO girl children on his side of the family for generations. I'm wondering how that will hold up against my side... in that all of my siblings and cousins have been girls (and there's over 10 of us so you'd think a boy would have popped up somewhere!)

At my last ultrasound at 9.5 weeks, the baby had a HR of 175.  Is that indicative of a girl?  DH is convinced it is a boy.  However, between my pregnancy breakouts (so much for a 'glow') and the HR, I'm thinking it is a girl....  I'm just so impatient!

I just had an 11w5d ultrasound today and the HR was 155.  This says boy.  The Chinese Gender calendar says boy.  The timing of our sex w/ ovulation says girl.  Shrug.

...Just thought I would resurrect this thread since some of us have found out the sex...for fun :)

This time, more of the Old Wives Tales have been true for me - I am carrying in my hips, have acne, chinese gender prediction was right (it was wrong last time), kids respond true to expectation (girls are show offish and boys are friendly...although now LO's in general just kind of stare at me with their mouths hanging open, when before I was pregnant, they would more or less ignore me).  The only thing that is "off" is the heart rate theory - DS had a high heart rate and this baby (a girl) has a lower heart rate.

Both heartrate and Chinese gender predictions were right. We're having a boy. :)

So far I have been totally wrong with my last 3 babies--they were each the opposite of what I was convinced they were going to be! Everyone else in my family seems to predict better than I can.

My DH's grandmother has some kind of prediction where she takes the number of months and number of years apart the unborn baby will be from its closest sibling and then if the 2 numbers are both even or both odd its whatever the sex of the sibling is and if they are odd and even then its the oppostie sex...or something like that.  Anyway, she has never been wrong before and will do the math for everyone who has a sibling that you can think of and it always works.  She says this one will be a girl so we will see. It will be 10 years and 3 months younger than her older brother. The only time it could be wrong is if the baby comes in the month before or after what you thought it was due.  Everyone else besides her thinks its a girl too but probably because my oldest and our only girl has threatened to move out if its not a sister!

Heartrate, ring test and shettles method were right for this girl. My morning sickness was much more severe than with my boys, too.

Chinese gender predictor and old wive's tales about cravings were wrong, as was my own intuition! I was SO SURE this was a boy - I just felt it. In fact, I'm still struggling to really grasp the concept that this IS indeed a female child growing inside of me. I'm not bonding like I think I would with a boy. Strange. I'm sure I will, though - it's just a system shock after two sons.

I'm not really sure what all the girl signs are, but the fact that this pregnancy was a whole lot different than my last, made me think it was a girl at first. Then I thought I had to be crazy, gender has nothing to do with how sick you are etc.. But now that I know I'm having a girl.. I feel like maybe it does have something to do with it!! It's fun to guess anyways! I was totally convinced it was a boy. But yay!! I'm so happy to get a little girl!

I haven't gotten the official word yet re: Girl or Boy, but I've been playing around with the old wives tales just to see what they say. It will be interesting to compare when I really know for sure, but for now:

Reasons I think it's a BOY:

*I'm already carrying high and out front (with DD I carried LOW from the start, but also rather OUT FRONT, because I'm short so the bump has nowhere to go!)

*I haven't really gained anything in my hips/thighs or bum yet (With DD I gained an entire INCH around my thighs during the first 20 weeks, and my butt gained so much that I got my only stretchmarks along the top of my butt. Although the weight-gain difference could be due to the fact that I AM running this time and didn't with DD)

*I'm craving savory, spicy, and sour things (with DD it was all sweets, all the time. During my first tri this time I actually had an aversion to sweet stuff!)

*My leg/underarm hair is growing like crazy!

*I have no acne (though I did suffer from a slight increase in the first tri, it was nothing like with DD)

*I ovulated during a male moon sign of either Pisces orAries (If you haven't heard of this you can go to this website and--if you know when you ovulated--check the moon sign http://www.moonsigncalendar.net/moonphase.asp With DD I ovulated under a female sign of Capricorn)

Well, even though DH isn't convinced, I am convinced that ours is a boy and I have all those things going on too.  I have never been one to pass on sweets and just the thought of eating sweets now EEWWWWW

I think that the OWT's make more sense when comparing our own pregnancies to each other rather than to each other's pregnancies to one another - Random thought :)
