Second Trimester Symptoms Thread

Thread Starter

I thought it was time for one of these.  I think everyone should be in the second tri by now (I'll be 19 weeks tomorrow)

Here is a spot to marvel or moan about those 2nd trimester symptoms and to compare notes, tips and tricks.

So far I haven't had much in the way of symptoms.  I have days where I am very hungry and others not so much.  I haven't had any cravings yet (with DS I couldn't eat enough brocolli!) and can still sleep comfortably on my side with a pillow between my knees.  My lower back around my sacrum is sore, but I think this is due to a fall I took down the stairs about a month ago, and while pregnancy may make healing slower I don't think the symptom is due to pregnancy.

Anybody else?

Stairs, ladders and any other climbing are making me unusually tired. Some round ligament pains, nothing too bad yet. The oh-so-fun peeing a little every time I cough/sneeze and sometimes round ligament pains from that too. Heartburn sometimes, though the extra calcium I'm taking now is helping so far. Peeing often, waking every morning between 1-5am having to pee. I am having cravings (milk, ice cream, Chinese food, meat, etc.) and very on/off hunger, ravenous to nothing to ravenous.

And with the twins, I feel like I'm at the end of the 2nd trimester already. I feel pretty big and my uterus feels crowded and I'm already bumping into stuff a bit with my tummy (FYI turning sideways to squeeze through does not work past a certain point). My back hasn't started hurting yet, but I think soon. I'm less comfortable sleeping, but doing ok so far. I'm feeling much better than 1st trimester, but I'm still tiring easily and going to bed early more often than not. I'm a bit concerned with how tired and big I'm going to be at the end, so trying to take it easy but also get what I can done now while I'm still doing pretty well. This is really a big change from last pregnancy as that one I hardly slowed down at all except for some 1st trimester fatigue.

Oh man, at my last appointment I was measuring at 6 months and my body SO feels like it. greensad.gif I am incredibly sore (stomach and back) and it is getting so much harder to move around. Like Quinalla, I am nervous about how I am going to feel as time goes on....since I am only 16.5 weeks right now. I only have 2.5 weeks of work left so I am hoping that being able to lay down whenever I need to will help.

Well, thanks for starting this thread so I could vent. smile.gif

I still have nausea but I am peeing a bit less at night. Urinary incontinence while sneezing etc has also slowed down =)  I feel so much bigger this time around and have gained over 30lbs, which feels like a huge adjustment. I eat so much to reduce nausea.

I am having heartburn and I really don't think it is fair to go straight from nausea to heartburn! I am having braxton hicks already as well.  Stronger then I thought I would be at this stage as I am only 18 weeks now.  I saw the midwife last week and heard the heartbeat and have an u/s this week.  I was also a little surprised I hadn't gained any weight the last 2 months.  I gained 4 pounds right at the start and now nothing.  I am getting bigger and measuring right at 18 weeks so I am sure the weight will come on later.

Oh SpashingPuddle, I"m sorry you still aren't feeling well!  I hope it eases up soon!   I am  still having a bit of ickiness in the evening but nothing too bad most of the time.  Other than that and issues with my hips if I do a lot or sit too long I am doing pretty good.  I have decent energy during the day but I usually hit a wall and just run out between 5 and 6 PM.  Overall, doing ok though!  I am thankful for that!

Hip and shoulder pain! I've officially transitioned to sleeping on my side, and my body does not like it at all! I really miss sleeping on my back.

I have a big body pillow that I hug and put between my knees, but my shoulder and hip still ache.

ufff, I am STILL nauseous. it went away for like 3 days. HELP!!!  (I'm at 18 weeks today ...). hope everyone gets some relief soon!

My nausea (which was pretty epic during the first trimester) is pretty much gone now, which is pretty much the best thing ever (those of you still feeling nauseous, I'm sending you all my anti-nausea vibes!).  Not only am I able to eat again, but I'm like, really LOVING food now.  I'm pretty sure everything tastes BETTER now than it did before I was pregnant.  Also definitely getting the round ligament pains a lot, particularly when sneezing - which is, adorably, accompanied by that glamorous peeing thing.  Also waking up pretty much every night between around 2-4 to go to the bathroom.  My lower back has been hurting more and more, and last night it was so bad it woke me up, actually.  I couldn't find a position (right side or left) that made it better, and finally ended up rebelling and lying on my back for the last hour or so before my alarm went off.  I tried the pillow between my knees thing, but that didn't make much of a difference either.  Experienced mamas: any suggestions on how to deal with that?

...oh, and do anyone else's nipples ever feel like they're on fire?

Oh yeah, BHs too, never could feel them with my first pregnancy, but I've had some this time.

Oh and I've been doing the roll over and slowly lift myself upright to get out of bed trick for awhile now. Was bending over the tub last night for DD's bath too far apparently and got a sharp kick/punch/something from one of the babes smile.gif

lisedea, sounds good on being done with work soon, I may not work to the bitter end this time or work from home more, we'll see. At least I have the option to work from home!

YES! Just recently though...

Ah yes....the waking to pee thing!  At least one a night for me.  But I am so thirsty in the evenings (I guess another symptom?) that I can't not drink water before bed.

Mamas with hip pain...you could try a matress topper.  I have one this pg and didn't last time and am finding side sleeping much more comfortable as a result.  Also, you may need to change pillows depending on thickness of your pillow.  Depending on how you used to sleep your pillow may not be right for side sleeping.

That IS great! I do not have that option (as I am an elementary teacher) but my doctor has ordered me off work (and bed rest) by 20 weeks. I won't know what to do with myself!

Post here a lot for sure! Do you have netflix, an e-reader, hmm. I know I would go nuts on bed rest that long myself too, is it super strict bedrest or will you be able to do some stuff?
Quinalla--Not strict until I am told otherwise--until that point I am just supposed to 'listen to my body'. The main issue right now is that I live on a island and have to move off to be closer to the hospital...which means not even staying in my own house! Extra things to work through....but I know everything will fall into place. I will DEFINITELY be posting a lot on this forum. You all are going to be sick of me! smile.gif

No skyping in your classes?  Sheesh, it's 2012!  I bet the kids would get a kick out of that.

Round ligament pains.  Is that that thing where it feels like you're being stabbed in the vagina with a dull spoon?  If so, count me in.

Otherwise it seems like the morning sickness has faded.  My appetite comes and goes, often in the same day.  What's fun now is that I'm not necessarily hungry but apparently I need food.  I almost fell over setting something down last night because it was 6 and I hadn't eaten dinner yet.  If my body could clue me in before it gets to that point that would be nice.

I do notice I'm a bit more headachy lately, but that could be the weather since we've had a warm spell.

Finally I haven't been sleeping terribly well lately.  Not waking up to pee or anything but just waking up for no apparent reason.  Then come the dreams.  Dreamt about shopping for maternity clothes last night followed by one this morning that was terribly upsetting even though it shouldn't have been and I can't remember it now but it was upsetting enough that I woke up from it.

Don't even get me started on the itching.  My left boob seems to be the instigator and wouldn't you know it, there's no good, discreet way to scratch one's boob...especially at work...during meetings...with people with eyes.

lol.gif Yes, I think those are the ones that feel like a dull spoon!

The itching comes and goes for me and has mostly been on the belly which is more ok to scratch in public, especially under the table or something semi-discreet. My boobs itched constantly last pregnancy, so annoying as you can't really scratch them in public. I had a little bit of boob itching in the 1st trimester this time, but nothing much since thank goodness! You know the most annoying thing about my belly itching is when I complain to DH he always says something like "Well yeah, the skin is stretching, of course it itches." and I have to remind him that yes I know that genius, I'm looking for sympathy here smile.gif
