How to safely make stairs quiet, stair coverings

I hear the stair pads with backings dont stay in place.The home depot has an elaborate carpet set up which must include drilling/installation and is expensive. Any quick ideas for an apartment dweller? I think i saw rubberized mats somewhere but figured they may move around too? Do people glue them down without ruining the floor? Stairs are feeling harder to be quiet on with this pregnant body and also sending "loud" vibrations.. Is this a hard one to safely solve?

Bumping, just in case. Wish i could figure this out on my own. Trying to find something returnable in case it doesnt work out. Who else has stairs? Its harder lately to go up and down quietly at odd hours. Tell me what you have, where you got it? Anyone have a good method for the pads stayingsafely in place??
