Alternatives to My Little Ponies

My kids absolutely love their ponies, but I'm looking for a safer alternative that they might like more. I want something small (so no big stuffed animals). I've seen some cute needle felted alternatives, but they are expensive and the 2 year old can be rough. I'm thinking either wood or sewn felt or even cotton? There were a couple on etsy that seem to be sold out. My only other plan is buy a pattern and make some myself. They don't have to be exact replicas, but colorful ponies/unicorns/pegasuses would be fun. Patterns/tutorials would also be appreciated. Thanks!

Here, it's an actual My little Ponie pattern, plus it's free, and it looks real cute. 

don't know, if you don't want to reinforce the "My little Ponie" image, but I like it!
