vomiting all night ... how worried should I be?

Before I call my midwives in a panic, I wanted to get your perspective on some pretty bad illness last night. they probably can;t see me until afternoon anyway, and if you ladies suggest calling them I most definitely will!

As context - I'm 18+1 and didn't have more than mild nausea in the first tri, so I don't think this was morning sickness.

I think I got food poisoning - I was feeling fine until after eating some pickles (DH started it, not a craving!) - they were commercially bought pickles that DH's uncle sent us. DH ate one and was fine. I ate two and thought they tasted strange but I don't like bread and butter, and they tasted like a combo of dill and B+B.

we went to bed about 60-90 minutes later, and I was definitely feeling sick at that point. about 20 minutes after bed time, the illness began in earnest. I was up every 20-30 minutes vomiting at first - the first couple times were "productive" and after that it was just nasty bitter stomach juice and dry heaves. This went on all night - every time I got comfortable and started to fall asleep, I started heaving again. Probably up every 2 hours or so through the night. I lost count of how many times after 7.

At around 3 am I started getting dizzy and having chills, and tried to drink some water and eat some crackers. at least that gave me something to throw back up, ugh. I started keeping water with some sugar and salt in it down at about 5am, and drank half a glass of it upon crawling out of bed at 8. I had a bit more water in the last 2 hours and haven't vomited since, so I think the worst has passed.

some part of me sees this as the universe preparing me to get up every 2 hours to care for an infant, but the logical part says this one of the worst vomiting spells I have had in my adult life, and with the other I received 2L of fluids IV for dehydration. I also wonder how good it can be for the baby to have all that stomach heaving and go without much in the way of nutrients for 12 hours.

your thoughts are welcome - I'll be here trying some crackers again and sipping warm lemon tea.

(as a funny side note, DH joked that I'm just channeling Kate Middleton, and called me "duchess" when he checked in on me this morning.)

It sounds like bad food poisoning and I'm sorry you went through that hug.gif , but I would still call your midwives and see if they think you need to do more than take it easy and try to slowly work nutrition back in and get rehydrated. I don't think you need to worry about your baby for one night of vomitting, fat stores will be used to nourish the baby if needed.

I would call the MW just to check but you are probably ok as long as you can get hydrated again.  My doctor likes to remind me that I can go 5 days without food (I'd like to see him have MS and go 5 days without food) just as long as I am hydrated.  It sounds like the worst of it is over, I hope you are feeling better soon!

Thank you for the advice, ladies! I'll call the MW to let them know, but have been keeping down water and am feeling a bit better by the hour.

Hoping none of you get to have this joy as we're in the second tri now!

I agree, no harm in calling to check in. Maybe they have suggestions for something to keep down - at minimum, they can reassure you. Rest up today if you can and feel better soon!

Update - I finally got a hold of the midwife on call and she was very kind and reassuring. She actually said it was ok to not take anything by mouth for 6-12 hours, including liquid, to help my tummy settle. I was surprised at how relaxed she was, and it helped put me at ease.

Heading home now to rest, thanks for the support!

Oh I'm so sorry you went through that. It really sucks to have that happen, especialy pregnant. sending hugs. I completely know how your feeling though because I had the worst vomiting of my life 3 days ago. It was so terrible and I was a mess and really freaked out for the baby. I thought I had pin pointed the exact thing that I got the food poisoning from but when I talked to my midwives who I frantically called they thought it sounded more like the stomach flu and I guess its going around. They also were very reassuring and recommended rehydrating once my stomach was calm with recharge and coconut water and eating plain food. I'm more convinced that it's the stomach flu because my dh was sick yesterday but only had the diarrhea and flu symtoms not the horrid all day vomiting and heaving so maybe I got both, who knows. but it sucks and I hope your on your way to feeling better.
