Weve decided to homeschool/unschool and live in NC. My daughter will be 6 in April but I know that you have to start testing and whatnot at age 7. Where is it that you start? Were not in a very "crunchy" town and I actually dont know anyone who homeschools. We also dont vaccinate but I think for that I just fill out a statement saying its against our religious beliefs and keep it filed. Just any help on where to get started would be greatly appreciated. People have kind of made me nervous telling me that NC is a hard state for HS.
Beginning homeschool in NC
Hello and welcome to your new life!
First step is go to the www.HSLDA.org and pick NC and see the laws in your state and what you need to do.
The fun part begins when you start picking out a curriculum you want to follow. You must look into this with care, taking in how much direction you desire and how your daughter learns. There are many out there, some just guide you, others take it day by day on a schedule.
You must start by figuring out what kind of person you are, because it is not about you, you then pick something that will keep you on track and work for your daughter. This is very important.
After that, you start by organizing and then paying special attention to how much she learns and how she learns. This is where you adjust!
What you have to realize is that this is a great time for you and your daughter. The world is now your oyster! The power to learn has been given to you and nothing is in your way.
If you need help along the way, there are thousands of places to look, one being here, another on the only social network for homeschoolers - The Assembly - www.homeschoolerassembly.com.
You can ask and find out anything there. The rest comes with love and fun with you and your daughter! Get started, it is a glorious trip!
Let me know if you need anything, we are here to help you be a homeschooler!

Honestly, the hardest part for me was just naming our school. We didn't submit any paperwork until right at the cut off, 30 days before his 7th birthday, so you've got a year to figure out what works for your family before you go official. You will be surprised at all the "crunchies" who lurk, it's just a matter of getting out & meeting people. We've got a number of varied groups in my area. Have fun w/ it!
