So, any day now, right? - Page 2

I had my first stranger comment today.  While I was out doing some last minute shopping the cashier asked me "So is the baby coming before Christmas or after Christmas?"  I thought this was a strange comment since Christmas is only two days away and that means I would have a baby today or tomorrow.  I know I don't look like I'm due right now but it still irked me a bit.  Sheesh, think it through people!

I had someone say something similar today.... like 'any day now' or something similar..... It makes me laugh because I know I carry on the smaller side and that it is all perception. People need to keep the opinions to themselves.

I was signing a package from FedEx the other day, and the FE man looked down at my belly and said "WOW! YOU'RE PREGNANT!" ...yes, I am.. thanks?

People have yet to stop saying stupid crap to me.  Culturally touching the belly is a thing here and doesn't bother me but all the "When you gonna pop" comments are annoying.

tonight it was my IN-LAWS who said "wow, are you sure it's not twins?" on webchat.

nice guys, thanks. makes me feel really good!!!

i certainly don't feel it!  but people say things- and as my hubby pointed out, they haven't seen me since i was PRE-pregnant (meaning they didn't know) so it is only not pregnant and 8 months pregnant...

and it looks NOTHING like a beautiful, round and pert twin belly.  not taking offense!!!

Yes! I get this a lot. People are like, OMG you're due in February? You are so huge! I am actually pretty proud of this, strangely enough. Although, I mentioned to my life partner that it really could be any day now, because it is possible to give birth 30 days prior or after the due date. My doula confirmed this for us today and stated that at 33w, if I gave birth tomorrow, It'd be considered a full term baby. I have a feeling that my baby is going to come on time or later. Just a feeling.

Oh yeah, I get the "are you sure you're not having twins" comment as well. For me, I actually don't know... although my midwife stated it is very unlikely. Still, I'm like, could be....

33w?  Don't get me wrong, a 33w baby is very, very viable, but I have never heard of full term as being anything earlier than 36w (some say 37w).

Yeah, I'd be on the search for another doula. Babies born at 33 weeks generally have at least a 10 day nicu stay, along with some feeding/growing problems and often respitory issues. If you went into labor at 33 weeks, the hospital would attempt to stop labor, they do not want babies born that early. And if someone is planning a homebirth, they most certainly should not be delivering at home at that gestation.

While babies can be born 30 days before/after the due date- that is 46-44 weeks which is a pretty huge range. Babies born at 36 weeks are generally not really ready to be born, and 44 weeks is just too late. I'd really say its more accurate that babies can be born within 30 days of the due date, making the range 38-42 weeks.

I would agree with that.

Since my last (first) pregnancy ended in miscarriage, I've been consistently checking the stats every week to see the chances of survival and how much intervention would be necessary if she were born at whatever week. I'm now 34 weeks, which is apparently the first gestational week where they will even consider allowing a mother to go into labour without doing all they can to prevent it - and that's only if the baby in question seems capable of handling life outside the womb (i.e,, generally female because they're stronger, good weight, etc).

Babies are premature until 37 weeks (some people say 36, but it's most often 37), and usually require some kind of help from the NICU before that, which is why you aren't generally allowed to have a homebirth before 37 weeks. Any doula who suggests that you can should be seriously questioned, since that's an important piece of information to be wrong about.

Yeah, TBH, I was thinking the same thing-- sounds like a very misinformed doula, and honestly scares me a little!  If there was a typo, maybe, is the only thing I can think of...  or maybe a misspeak... since MommaHeather was talking about a month range (that would start at 36 weeks, not 33).  But no one in this DDC should be farther along than about 34.5, so the "if I gave birth tomorrow" does imply something earlier than 36 weeks...  Yeah, that's a bit scary.  I'm super-super-super pro-homebirth and natural childbirth and low-intervention and, to a great extent, "let nature take its course, we're not all exactly average" and whatnot, but I would never think of 33w as no big deal, "full-term," etc.

My cousin's fiance had to be induced/sectioned at "35 weeks" recently, for apparent Pre-E.  Now, I was sure all this time she was really more like 33w, because they kept "moving" her dates for all sorts of specious reasons, and I think my suspicions were confirmed when the baby came out at 3 lbs, 11 oz.  That was a couple of weeks in the NICU, easy.  He's fine now-- which is part of why I say 33w is pretty darned viable.  33-weekers overwhelmingly survive, and usually come out in the end without long-term issues.  But "full-term?"  Nah.
