Flu, failed GTT, and low platelets... Scared at 28.5 weeks

I saw my OB yesterday for normal 28 week appt, but called the day before due to acute upper respiratory infection/symptoms. I had my scheduled one-hr GTT, an U/S to check placenta one ast time (prior C-section and anterior placenta), and thn usual appt.

The good news:
Placenta perfect
Baby perfect/growing/active (most important)
BP my usual low normal, 98/58
No rotein or ketones in my urine
Temp was 98.8
Oxygen sats were 96%+ (normal)

The bad news:
Positive swab for influenza A (i had chsen not to be vaccinated). Ugh.
Failed GTT (4th pregnancy, including twins once, and have always passed before)
Somewhat anemic
Platelets 108. BIG and SCARY -- see below

I went back today for a full pre-eclampsia/HELLP panel, because I had HELLP with twin pregnancy (32 weeks).

Naturally, am freaking out. Any sage advice? Could this just be viral overload/a very sick body??

I would ask about redoing the GTT when you are not sick. I really think that it's one of those things that can throw off your blood sugars.

How has your eating been? Are you getting lots of calories and protein?

I don't have advice for the plateletts but for the GTT I would definitely ask for it to be repeated.  Or you could possibly pass the 3 hour (which I assume comes next?!).  In 6 pregnancies getting that far I failed only 1 time and passed the 3 hour with flying colors.  I decided it was because I had a large glass of chocolate milk and banana right before the test HAHAHAHAHAHA

I'm so sorry you have the flu mama, that just stinks and I hope you feel better soon.  Do you feel off, like you might have HELLP?

Thanks for the responses. And happy holidays!

My HELLP/pre-E panel came back "stone-cold normal." Huge relief. So I guess ow it's "just" figuring out the GTT, anemia, and platelets.

To answer your qustions, i have not been eating as much as I need to eat. Just feeling kind of rotten. Plus the holidays and a somewhat stressful marital situation...hasn't been a ton of fun in the last two weeks.

That said, no -- I don't feel like I have HELLP at all. Flu, yes; liver/kidney issues, no. I guess I should trust my own instincts more and freak out less wink1.gif

Vachi, so glad to hear that your HELLP/pre-e panel came back "stone-cold normal"!

I agree with the others that you may have different results from 3-hour GTT test when you have recovered from your flu. Re: deciding not to vaccinate, who knows if you got the strain of flu that the vaccine would have covered.

Take good care and feel better soon. Not feeling well when you are preggo is just tough!
